Boycie A more interesting way to mark the passing of a work colleague than simply going to the boozer and getting smashed? Have a 4.1 mile handicap run of which the first 1.5 miles are hideously uphill and then go to the boozer and get smashed! Sturman came up with a genius formula which meant that the 8 runners, 1 biker and 2 car drivers all left at roughly minute intervals, except for one lad Boyo who got a 5 minute head start as he had never run more than 2 miles before and DL who was riding a rather demon looking racer, so warranted starting at least 8 minutes after all the runners! Knowing that the first mile and a bit was from Bristol Uni up Hampton Rd and on up to the Downs, my original tactic was to take the first mile as steady as possible - as steady as possible being 5:45 and overtaking Bob who started a minute in front of me at 5:30! By the time the water tower and the downs were upon me I was feeling pretty whacked already, but I had Boss Hogg in sight, although it took me until over 2 mile marker to pass him... After this there was a steady stream of competitors: Boyo, Roman, Crusher and Brook not to mention PB who had started behind me on the basis of a 10 mile time set in 1993! By the time we reached the top of the Ladies mile, Sturman was in sight, but he produced a finish of epic proportions and I couldn't quite run him down - beating me by 2 seconds - but as it was his farewell race that seemed only fair. Dickie was already home and showered by the time we made it, his handicap time of 32 minutes was far too generous!!!!
