Hibeedeb My first marathon. Well prepared, but badly executed! There was no energy drink left by the time I got to the drink stations, and I had no gels or snacks, so tried to get round on water!

Yano My 1st ever marathon and it was a scorching day! I suppose in retrospect my tale is mainly upbeat but it didn't feel like that at the time. This was my first time and the aim was to run steady 8.5 miles and finish 3.45-4.00. Unfortunately I ended up really near the front at the start and got swept along by the crowds - did the first half in about 1.40 (including jumping in the bushes for a pee and getting my legs covered in nettle stings!), which was way too fast for me. Tried to slow down but couldn't get the pacing right at all - made it to 19 in 2.30, saw some friends, felt fine and started to think maybe I would be ok. Somewhere on the slight uphill between 20 and 21 my world started to fall apart, hit the wall and had to walk. Recovered to get to Portobello beach at 22 in 2.55, still ahead of schedule. The last 4 miles are a blur of wind, uphill, sun, dehydration and constant pain - took me 45 minutes. Must have walked, more than I ran - pulled it together to run the last mile and fell over the line in 3.39. So I suppose I'm happy with the time in retrospect, but as a race tactic it was sheer stupidity! I certainly have a lot more respect for the 26.2 distance now.
