How much fitness is it possible to lose by aggressive tapering? I'm guessing - zero.

5 days is not going to lose you anything - I had a similar sort of lay off the week before a race 2 years ago I think the extra days off did more good than harm.

Your words of encouragement and inspiration, coupled with your excellent hydration recommendations has spurred me on to sit back and do bugger all until I go get me a PB on Sunday !

I guess your next year's GSR training schedule might have a slightly different final week if you have a good run at the weekend

Indeed weiner dog - before my last HM I had four days where I could not train at all and achieved my best time for 2.5 years. I'm sure the rest was quite a help (though I wouldn't recommend the reason *why* I had the rest.)

I did Edinburgh marathon in 2006 and didn't really understand the concept of tapering. I had three pints on Thursday, two pints on Friday and just one on the Saturday night before Sunday race. Seemed to work okay

Ladies and gents ..... As promised, I am reporting back after my week 'off' and the great South Run today.
I heeded all your advice and rested, but did a 2 mile very gentle jog yesterday just to check my knee was OK to run on. So today was race day, and I set off too quick which meant after about 6 miles I let my head drop and actually walked 3 times between 6 and 9 miles. BUT then, despite the howling in-yer-face wind, I looked at my Garmin and realised that although my goal of sub 1:15 was gone, I could still bag a PB, so I sorted my head out, took a deep breath and powered through the finish line at 1:16:16 - a PB by 20 seconds. Not bad considering the walking and the wind .....
Guinness has helped this afternoon, as has a Chelsea victory ! Thanks for all your advice last week ..... Clatters !
