Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Do you mean weeks 2-5 of the plan (first 2-5 weeks)? That's what I would do, you essentially just do more base training, then continue with week six. In that case you just will have a bigger aerobic base, I wouldn't repeat the last 4 weeks though as that is where you will be training to peak for the half, and repeating it would probably wear you down too much.

Hi Jacobi.

Thanks, thats sounds like a better idea. I've actually done almost the first 6 weeks of the 15 week plan. Like you say I'll definitely feel fresher doing it that way.

How do you do second long run? I have been doing the longest run as a progressive heart rate run, as suggested in Advanced Marathoning but just doing the second long run at recovery run heart rate but think this might be too slow.

It depends how tired you feel - when I trained for marathon I did the second long run as an easy run as I adjusted to the mileage. You could probably go for between recovery pace and long run pace, maybe down to steady pace if you feel fresh. For half marathon steady pace would probably be ok, but once you start doing faster interval/tempo work, you might want to keep the pace down to allow recovery.

Actually, doing long slow recovery runs is something Japanese marathon runners sometimes do - 2 hours very easy jogging for example.

Ian, you should be running 10km races - get the sub 40 and you'll have the complete set of times :)

Thanks Jacobi.

Yeah its definitely a weak point, my 10k time. Im debating on concentrating on a 10k in April instead of the half in early May. I've already got a 14 miler in July and hopefully the GNR in September, so now might be a good time to concentrate on it.

What you got planned at the moment?

First attempt at a run with strides today

7 miles general...(turned out to be 8:30ish pace today)...I started doing strides at about 4.5 miles, just banging in rough 100m when I hit a straight bit of path. 10 strides in the last 2.5 miles of the run. I didn't stop between them, but just slowed to a jog.

Splits are good

8.30,8.28,8.19,8.21,7.36,7.48,7.55

Is this the right way to do them? I have to say that I found it an interesting and fun session

Homer, thats sounds about right from what everyone has mentioned on here a couple of pages ago.

I've only done them once myself and just jogged for about a minute inbetween each repetition.

Is this the first time you have followed P&D?
