So GER is done, and my next half is booked - Bedford on December 9th.
Including this week, there are 8 weeks of training until the race, which is a nice pleasing round number.
Five lessons from GER to take forward:
1) Wear thicker shoes
Although saying that, my feet feel fine, perhaps just check the race surfaces. I got a little airbag blister on my fourth toe, but that was because of a toenail digging in, not the shoes.
2) Know where the hills are.
I didn't look at the course profile for the GER. I know Bedford will be hillier (I've run it twice before), so maybe making some allowances with pacing will help.
3) Go over distance.
I built up to two twelves before GER, with a top five runs totalling 55.5 miles. My PB in 2008 came with a 16, a 14, and a top five totalling 65.2 miles. That may be a little more than I need, but two over-distance runs is a definite.
4) Jelly babies not gels.
The gels were difficult to incorporate during GER - I felt stitchy, and kicked out of my pattern. Our best 12 in training came when we ate a couple of jelly babies every two miles. Felt like a more consistent run, and maybe it balances out the dips in energy a bit better.
5) More speedwork / faster stuff.
We were pretty happy to do what we did, on the back of how we trained - but there's another clear difference when you look at my GER versus 2008. In 2008 I had a combined 50 miles of "tempo" (aka hard club runs) and racing. Before GER I logged about 18 miles of tempo runs.

It's a race blog.
I've done a few races each year for the last few years, but not much that we've tried to plan for. So by the time we got to race day, I was feeling pretty nervous about just how things would go. Training was up and down - I have my boy every other weekend - it's about mastering a fortnightly training cycle, and it's hard to remember where you are sometimes. Long running with K went very well, although we'd both have liked to have gone a bit further. I think we'd both have benefited from a bit more speedwork too, particularly some longer pacier runs for me. So that's longer and faster. Covers everything
I love wandering around before a race - seeing everyone getting ready, looking out for familiar faces - and every race has some unique features. This one had those statue people that move when you're not expecting it, and a bread stall.
We found the Jigses, who are always lovely to see (unless made to wait for their dinner :-)), and Watford Wobble and Fizz - and saw some other Fetch tops (BrianJ) and recognisable faces, as we all migrated to the start line. Hugged my lovely wife, and we sang 'Two Little Boys', which we sang towards the end of our first long run months ago. Mrs Jigs reminded me that perhaps I should try and stand a bit further forward, so I went to the 1:45 bit. It was a bit of a crush trying to join from the side, and I imagined everyone running past and me having to start right from the back. But we soon filtered in, and the familiar smell of embrocation and mud intensified. A quick chat to the lovely Lawrence from the Bedford Harriers ("yeah, we're doing 8's" - and I never saw them again :-)), and a chat with another bloke who had done five races in five weeks - not for a challenge, just because he'd decided to enter loads. Also complaining of being injured - hmmm
Anyway... walking slowly forward, nerves all abandoned, totally oblivious to Sally Gunnell who was apparently starting us off, over the chip mats, and off
1) - 1m - 8:02(8:02/m) - 119cal
2) - 1m - 8:00(8:00/m) - 119cal
Hey, this is feeling ok - I need to better 8:05 to get a PB, and I feel like I'm running quite relaxed. There was a man in a Fetch cap, who if I remember rightly was Drell's OH - I shout "Howay Fetch" like I've suddenly turned into a Geordie. He looks at me like I'm a mentalist. Hello Mr Drell
3) - 1m - 7:56(7:56/m) - 119cal
First incline over the dual carriageway, and I try to keep a reasonable pace on the way up, and then claim it all back on the other side, then recover on the flat. Gobi taught me to do this, back in June 2005. Hello Gobi
4) - 1m - 7:54(7:54/m) - 119cal
Music hits me, so hard, makes me think "Oh my lord, thank you for blessing me, with a mind to rhyme and two hyped feet". I *love* running past music during races, it always gives me a massive kick.
5) - 1m - 7:57(7:57/m) - 119cal
Looking back, I was starting to feel the pace a little bit here, but I was looking forward to my first gel. Despite opening them all fine during training, I managed to rip a gaping hole, which felt weird, but I managed to get most of it in. It left me with a bit of a stitch below my ribs though, and took a while to bed in.
6) - 1m - 8:01(8:01/m) - 120cal
So I think this mile was all about getting my rhythym back, and about trying not to have a stitch any more.
7) - 1m - 7:58(7:58/m) - 119cal
Probably my most glidey mile - perhaps the gel finally reaching the spot, or maybe the nice road surface and running right up the middle of the road, gliding over the white lines - or maybe the fact that I'd gone past half way and things were going well - I had about a minute in the bag.
8) - 1m - 7:57(7:57/m) - 119cal
That lovely road surface started to get pretty bad here. I'd worn my flattest shoes, and they felt every pit in the road. I tried running *on* the white lines, which helped a bit as they were smoother, but it was starting to become hard work.
9) - 1m - 8:04(8:04/m) - 119cal
Really starting to get tough now, just a general feeling of tiredness. I took my second gel towards the back end of this mile, and got stitchy again. The sums started creeping in, and started getting scarier - do I really still have over half an hour of this?
10) - 1m - 8:12(8:11/m) - 120cal
Still just about holding on, but with the feeling that I'm holed below the water line.
11) - 1m - 8:25(8:25/m) - 119cal
I'm shouting at myself by now. I think Ted comes past, looking very strong, and he says nice things. A few minutes later I see CB and EB, and although they're busy cwching or something, it's a brief happy moment for me I helped make that cwch happen
12) - 1m - 8:29(8:29/m) - 118cal
Still miraculously just under 8:30 pace, but the only people I'm passing are the walking burnouts and injured. Pretty sure now that I won't get my PB, but I just want to get as close as I can, and for it to be better than my second best time.
13) - 1m - 8:30(8:30/m) - 117cal
Just really want it to stop now, and then there's that cruel left that takes you away from the finish area and off on an interminable loop - a bit like when Leon thinks he's escaped Stansfield. I get a cheer from Girlie, and all the supporters are shouting things like "C'mon Hayley", and "Well done girls, what an achievement" - I'm thinking "what the f*ck about me!". But that's just the way minds work in the last mile I think, and really, the supporters were awesome all the way round.
14) - 0.23m - 1:42(7:22/m) - 26cal
Finally, there's the finish line, and the brakes come off at last, and I push for the line. I know it's not a PB, but I'm quite beyond caring. It's done and I'm completely spent.
Perspective arrived instantly, with the site of a group of ambulance men grouped round a man lying on the floor. There are oxygen masks, and talks of shocking, and some very physical CPR happening. I'm a mixture of exhausted, and completely upset. They call for other runners to make a wall round him, and I go and join in, and one of his clubmates (or it could have been a Yaxley runner, it was all a bit blurred) puts an arm round me and I put mine around him, and fight back tears. After a while, another medical person arrives with blankets to make walls around him, and as we spread out, I need to go sit down, because I'm feeling like blacking out just a bit.
I sit down and stand up a few more times, wanting to make sure that when Katie crosses the line, she sees me before the medical efforts. There's another man who falls with cramp just a few metres before the line, and another guy being put into the recovery position, and it's all a bit like carnage. The Fizzywobbles come through, and then finally Katie, and we hug, and she's done, and she says "never again" as in"I'm not doing that again", but that's since been repositioned to "never again shall I have a race as bad as that", which is good news.
The guy receiving treatment was from Werrington Joggers, and the news from clubmates is that he regained consciousness yesterday, but has no recollection of the race. Undoubtedly, pushing our bodies to do these things can put us under stress, but as another Fetchie philosphically pointed out (and as geordiegirl puts so well in her article), running gives our bodies the strength to fight. C'mon Dave.

A great-paced run there Fetch, I'd be happy to run a half with those kind of splits at the moment! Last half I did was in March 2008 :-o. I also have a kind-of fortnightly training cycle, but this Sunday for example, I was up at 6.30 and back before S & D were awake. Stealth training. Scary business with that runner, hope it hasn't haunted you too much. This is possibly the longest comment I've ever left.Hendo8:22am, 17th Oct 2012
