The eggshells are a useful marker for where I've used dalek compost rather than bagged compost. Unfortunately, so is the profusion of annual weeds.

These weren’t broken down! I guess they need crushing first

I think you just have to accept rats in compost, you kill one lot and the next lot aren't far behind in my experience. Having chickens doesn't help i've found.

I have visions of aa alliance of less desirable creatures. Presumably the rats also eat chicken food, and the foxes eat the chickens ....

I shifted several tons of compost at the weekend, lovely stuff. Was more worried about encountering sleeping hedgehogs than rats. Eggshells take absolutely ages to compost, but at least crushing them up means they don't look like eggs when you put the compost in the garden. My compost heap gets sufficiently hot in summer that I don't think rats would be comfortable hanging round in it for much of the year.

Keep it away from Cybermen, EP.
Seriously, I think the best thing you can do is get another one to live alongside it, and turn the contents from one to the other, as well as making sure it's got a good mix of green and brown - so as well as soft garden waste and veg peelings, chuck in a few layers of shredded cardboard or packing paper (Amazon is your friend for this one!).
