After starting training on 24 Aug and setting a 23:28 mark in the sand I have been training steadily with recent parkruns at threshold HR on the same trail course getting time down to 21:37. So today I chose to break out the alphaflys (first use in years!) and head to the out and back seafront. Southsea parkrun.

A lovely day if a little windy. I surveyed the family for predictions - they weren’t hopeful. 20:50 was the best by my brother. I posted 19:59… without further comment, full of confidence.

I had researched where to start - top 20 is sub 20. (WTF: 500 runners and only 20 sub 20?!) I found some people to gauge my effort, ignored it and started way too fast! 3:40 first km! The alphas letting me fly. I was worried it was going to be very painful but also could sort of keep the pace 3:52 km 2. I was going off breathing and RPE as my HR was inexplicably stuck at 144; it turned out I had turned the chest strap off the other day when it was connecting in my bag and giving false readings and had forgotten to reconnect.

Batman ran past in the opposite direction and wanted a high 5 - I was struggling and focused so left him hanging 😂

3:57, 3:59, 4:01 and bits for 5.05km by my gps clocking 19:46 by parkrun! #boom Job done.

There’s probably 10 seconds more in there for some better pacing. One for November. I’m being asked about the Great South Run and halfs but why would I? Eyes on the prize, billy base phase. Build the miles, lose the weight (90.3kg currently) and get strong then in the new year do the hard work.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. People over estimate their ability in the short term and underestimate their long term potential.

Let’s chase the dragon!🐉
