Five interesting things within a mile of your home, this was a pretty easy one for me as I live slap bang in the middle of a very interesting town, so I was spoilt for choice. However, rather than go for the obvious, I plumped for 2 more traditional, historical interesting things, 2 quirky things that were interesting to me – although maybe not to anyone else - and 1 very cool interesting thing.
Interesting thing #1 Victoria Eugenia Theatre, a very pretty building, built in 1912, named after the granddaughter of Queen Victoria who was Queen of Spain from 1906 until 1931, when the Spanish royal family were exiled. She is also unfortunately known for inadvertently introducing haemophilia into the Spanish royal line.
Interesting thing #2 The English Cemetery. On Monte Urgull there is a very dilapidated monument for English troops who lost their lives in the first Carlist war (1834). As they weren’t catholic they weren’t buried in holy ground and instead were buried in a mass grave on the hill.
Interesting thing #3 This is one of the quirky things that just particularly appealed to me. I love these Narnia-esque lamps in Cristina Enea Park.
Interesting things #4. Also in Cristina Enea park, these little firs are a completely different type of tree to anything else found in the park and, perhaps enhanced by the Narnia-esque lighting, I think they look like little Basque tree sprites, under cover of darkness, I can imagine them coming to life and running around the park causing mischief, but perhaps I am just a bit odd that way!
Interesting thing #5: How cool is this? Whenever there is nice weather and a low tide, a very talented artist draws designs on the beach. There are a couple of people on the sand so hopefully you get a sense of scale, it is pretty impressive.
