Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

May Treasure Hunt - late late blog

I initially thought about missing this month out, but then again, I've put the time in hunting for these items, so I really should share them with you.

1. Opening. Look closely at this disused shepherds hut and the small (openings) windows at the sides. All is not what is seems as this is a WW2 gun emplacement which was cunningly disguised to look like an inocuous farm building. This sits on a high point of the coast road at Cresswell, protecting the road south should the Germans have ever landed on the beaches of Northumberland.

2. Disused. See above haha.

Alternatively, this is a stretch of the old Wannie line, the railway which linked the North East line with rural communities in Northumberland. The trees are so mature now that it shows that the Beeching Cuts to the railway network were such a long time ago!

3.Non-green leaf. Found one. Don't know what it is.

4. Fleur de lys. Absolutely Couldn't find one. A whole month and I didn't see one.

5. Information. This sign is on the gate of the building site where they're building our new leisure centre. I really like the 'what3words' app. The building site has three different gates, the exact location given in the information will ensure that any delivery goes to precisely the right spot.

6. Barrier. You might see a bit of a theme developing here. I have cycled past this pill box on numerous occasions, so decided to take a walk and go and inspect it closely. This forms part of the Wansbeck Stop Line, a chain of defensive points which tended to focus on protecting river crossings, therefore a barrier to an invading force. That is Mitford Castle, an older version of the same concept in the background.

7. Spring. I absolutely love the blossom on the trees in Spring. It's such a shame that it doesn't last very long.

8. I discovered this wishing well in a residential garden on my running route and stopped for a quick snap.

9. I kept forgetting about this task, probably because it's relatively easy to find one, but also because I wanted to find an unusual one too. I have settled on my old work vehicle - it's a trade !

10. Something starting with my initial. My real name starts with S, therefore I give you the stepping stones across the river Wansbeck. The second image is the same stones from the other side of the river, taken in January when the stones were swamped by the river after heavy rain. Not advisable to attempt a crossing now ;-)

Got something to say?

I was the usual skinny lad at school and hated cross country, even though I was quite good.
I discovered road cycling aged 21 and that has been my favourite sport ever since, but always with sporadic outbursts of running which was required for police fitness tests. In the 90's I ran the Great North Run a few times which was always done with only a few weeks build up. I discovered triathlon in my 40's and had to get the hang of swimming, then ticked off a bucket list objective when I finished Ironman UK in 2014. Now totally uninterested in swimming, the 2020 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns have kind of made the decision for me to retire from tri and just focus on cycling for fun and looking forward to resuming parkruns for the social occasions.
