Yes you read that right an actual race!
Pre race
Yesterday I was driving for 7hrs with little stoppage collecting Gnome. Not seen him for 10-11 months and he’s home for a week. So yes I will need to repeat the drive next weekend. As I was driving so much I didn’t drink much either.

Bed at normal time but a restless night and ended up getting up before my alarm.

Tea breakfast pack bag and car then off. Drive there was straight forward with no issues which was nice. Having not put a number on for 2 years I didn’t want extra stress 😜

Race headquarters and everything was well spaced and felt safe. Top work the organisers.

Bike racked I stroll round to the pool exit to leave shoes sox a towel and top. Transition is literally a 1/4 mile runaround the building to the back car park and I didn’t fancy running that bare foot.

Shivering a little I collected my chip. I’d spoken to one of my tri club coaches and his daughter had lost her chip twice in the swim/ pool side so I made sure mine was nice and secure.

The pool was shallow as in proper shallow one end but the far end has a slopping floor that throws the eyes so I kept slowing for the turn before I was actually at the end. Probably lost 20-30 secs over the swim.

Swim time estimate was 11 mins actually did 11:03.

Transition was over 7 mins due to the length of it! My top got stuck going on so again probably lost 20-30 seconds but once on I trotted off to my bike. Swapped from runners to bike shoes, downed a gel, put on sun sleeves (successfully so good purchase) and under helmet cap (both these things were testing for outlaw) and off I went.

Bike
Mildly undulating course not dissimilar to what I train on but windy! I hardly used my tri bars as between the wind and shocking road surface I didn’t want to risk it.

I hadn’t drunk much pre race thinking I’d make up for it on the bike but nope, I kept my hands firmly on the bars so didn’t drink much at all maybe 300ml.

Speed varied from 11mph to 22 depending on windy and where I was. But it was a good ride. Averaged 15pmh which is very pleasing.

T2

About 3 mins. Downed another gel and glugged drink to make up for not drinking on bike as I knew there was nowt on the run.

Run
3 laps.

At least 1/2 of each lap was on field which was spongy after the rain this week. The wind was blowing the tape off and waving everywhere! I don’t like running on grass normally and today hasn’t changed my mind! Slow and steady but a big plus as the only tri run I’ve done without walking.

Final time about 2hrs 1min.

It was so lovely to race again 😀 and see people and be cheered. Loved it.

I’ve done this race 2-3 times and the bike was my best by 4-5 mins and strava has given me about 25 segment pbs!

Enjoyed that.

Got something to say?
