Agar has a wide backswing and gave it a bloody good wallop. Nothing wrong with that, just not as aesthetically pleasing as watching the likes of David Gower, Mark Waugh and Michael Vaughan in years gone by! Honours even at the end of day two for me, Australia slightly ahead you could argue though. |

yes, talent yes, propensity to be an arse and get pissed no. Mind you Lamb, Gower, Gatting, Willis wouldn't ever get a game now either...Gooch, Knott would be guaranteed. |
I cant recall who said this on Sky commentary once, may have been Gower, after a fairly vociferous appeal by Jason Gillespie: 'There is a face only a mother could love.' |
My first cricket awareness was the Botham “leg over test”. First live cricket match was Hampshire Surrey at May’s bounty, Basingstoke in 1992. wisden.com An amazing line up as a kid with David Gower, Malcolm Marshall, Shaun Udal, Graham Thorpe, Ali Brown, and the Bicknell brothers. Used to head off to Grace Rd for final couple of hours of championship play after school as a teenager in the mid-70s. No longer got it but I got David Gower's autograph on a scorecard when he was an unknown 2nd XI player |
Gower was another, as is my son. I read a piece in one of the cricket magazines decades ago, arguing that what we call right-handed batting is actually left-handed, as if done properly the dominant hand should be the top hand, providing the skill element rather than the power. |
I think what the author was arguing was that finesse was more important than power, and the more skilful the batsman, the more likely to bat 'the wrong way round'. It was a long time ago though, I could easily be mis-remembering to some degree. The article had quite a list of those that conformed to the theory, I can only remember Gower and Tim Robinson, though. |

In all seriousness, it is in the Test arena where strengths become weaknesses. Note the plan to the Sri Lankan opener where they targeted the hips and put a leg gully in. I would think he has scored hundreds of runs through there without ever thinking about it. Remember Graham Gooch vs Terry Alderman and the falling over the front leg. what had been a huge strength became a weakness... Oh and DI Gower flirting with anything in the cover drive/slip region |

I wanted to ask a question to the thread. I get the feeling that many participants are of the opinion that our Test Match players get it wrong more often than they get it right. So... think back... name the years (if any) since you started watching cricket where you reached the end of the season and felt that the team played consistently well and were worthy of your praise. Obviously (and unfortunately) this question is skewed towards the men's team, because of the sparsity of women's Test cricket but that's no reason not to big up the women's best years too |

I don't think it's a case that they are not worthy of praise at all, Fetch. A couple of things. 1. I genuinely can't remember each year, but oftenthrough the 80's and 90's, we weren't very good or playing a vastly superior opposition (West Indies 84 and 88, Australia through the 90s and 2001). 2. I don't remember individual years in the 2000s, so 2005 stands out for obvious reasons. 3. Criticism of the current team is because they had done the hard work at 180-1. Knock the ball around the wide open spaces for another 90 minutes and come back in a position of strength at 270-2, with an old ball and a depleted attack. Play the situation a bit more, because the talent is clearly there. THAT is the frustration. It was tailor-made for Root to be Root yesterday.... but equally, that's sport. The opposition are entitled to either play well or lay down challenges for you to overcome - or not! Oh - and the majority of us have a vast catalogue of grumpy old men memories, which prevail far more than the glorious days of Gower and Robinson flogging the Aussies in 1985, nearly 40 years ago... |
