If England are going to bring back an opinionated, disruptive player who's scored a huge number of runs in tests and has an inflated opinion of his own worth, they may as well grasp the rhubarb stick and bring back Mr Boycott. At least he speaks with a local accent ;-). |

KP for a recall and Boycott to come out of retirement with his stick of rhubarb. |
That’s fine but we are going to have bump down boycotts mum and her rhubarb to 4. |
I think you will find that Boycott's mum is in better form with the rhubarb. |

That new Ashes XI in full Cook, Sir A (spin bowling all rounder) Boycott, G (could still whip the current top order with a stick of rhubarb) Vaughn, M (so we don't have to listen to him) Root, J (no one else is allowed the no. 4 spot now) Gatting, M (an anchor for the innings, or possibly just a useful anchor) + Jardine, D (ghost of, because the Aussies don't like it up 'em) * Moeen Ali (he has compromising pictures of the selection committee... he must have) Pringle, D (just because) Larwood, H (see Jardine, D) Tufnell, P (see Vaughn, M) Other, AN (random fast bowler picked from the walking wounded) 12th Man: Leach, J * Captain + Wicketkeeper (with the specialist keeper deemed obsolete, go for the widest barrier) |

Would one of the Boycotts in that team be Geoffrey's mum with a stick of rhubarb? You actually read my mind while I typed it. |
You do have to question selection of 2 new bowlers in an Ashes test. Bit different if bring them in against Bangladesh or something or any test with a lower profile. The press do sometimes over egg things though -eulogising about Michael Carberry's ton the other day -against Bangladesh A, no doubt made with a stick of rhubarb. |

Jeffrey out. Bring back Geoffrey. To bowl. With his granny and her stick of rhubarb to bat. Obvs. I should think Gooch is still running laps so that's the top order sorted in 1977. |
And his mum. Those two are incredible, playing with willow, rhubarb, whatevers lying around. |
Actually Michael Clarke would probably bat better at the moment with a stick of rhubarb or a sweeping brush |
I have problems remember what match I watched last month, never mind my first one. I do recall watching Geoffrey playing without any Rhubarb, latterly partnered with Tavare. Exciting times. |

We did; he's not technically correct enough to open. See also Hales. And this is the problem; with the advent of hit and wish cricket, good technique is less of a prized commodity, so fewer players are produced. /grandma, stick of rhubarb, uncovered pitches, dig in |

Morning Wrigglers, morning everyone. I'd planned a day off for today, but have come to work to do some admin, it was so dull yesterday. I will at least have it burbling away in the background. Quite frankly, I reckon my granny could play on this with a stick of rhubarb. She may not be good at quick singles, on account of being dead, but she'd probably play well behind the wicket and straight down the ground. |
Afternoon everyone, Boycs would have got to less than 7 in 90 minutes, even with a stick of rhubarb. Actually Cookie could do with a stick of rhubarb now !! |

My dear old mom and her stick of rhubarb is no Derek Pringle So we're taking the same 16 players to India (plus Jimmy) and it has apparently been important to rotate a spinner and a quick bowler because we need to have a look at them. It's reasonable to see Duckett get a chance for several Tests (but why isn't Batty accorded the same respect?)... ...but we've not given either Buttlerfingers or Hameed a go in spinning conditions, so what happens if a batsman is injured or *needs to be dropped*? We throw in someone who hasn't had a bat in anger on this tour and say 'good luck, son!' |

I think if you want a spinner to satisfy Captain Jardine, he'd prefer Hedley Verity. Can't see Fozz disagreeing with another Yorkie in the line up either. I presume Boycs Granny would open with Hobbs. If only to demonstrate how she'd be playing Lyon with a stick of Rhubarb. |
Not sure it would be a stick of forced rhubarb though -probably the more robust stuff that you grow in the garden |

Going back to mention of Ed Smith, has there been another period with so much change in the TMS commentary box? In the last 11 years, they've lost Blofeld, Boycott, Smith, Selvey, CMJ and Frindall (RIP x2) off the top of my head - and that's before you get on to opposition commentators like Tony Cozier (RIP again, alas). I know there always change over time but I can't recall that much churn since I started listening... PS I'm ambivalent about Smith's commentary - he's slightly too pleased with himself - but he's an excellent writer: I do miss his New Statesman columns. |

I think it's the best line-up they've ever had. Isa Guha is excellent. Andy Zaltzman has his long career as a comedian and as a radio presenter to draw from, so perhaps not surprising that he's wittier than previous scorers/statisticians. Dan Norcross obviously created and presented a successful alternative to TMS, which is an interesting career path to landing a job. Boycott had become a caricature, the programme is much improved without him. (Not sure about your comment on Vaughan's politics. He's very much in the Boycott/ Botham mould - openly Conservative/ pro-Brexit, tweeted about us needing a Trump-style leader in Britain.) |

Here's one. I filtered a list of England's top test match century makers, to only include players who have featured in matches since 1980 (so Greig 72-77 doesn't feature, but Boycott 64-82 does). This list appears to include everyone who has six centuries or more. Then I looked at who has the best "innings per 100" ratio. The top player on my list scored a hundred every 7.33 innings. The least prolific scored a hundred every 20.5 innings. Your guesses for the most and least efficient, please |
