New KML export button

5:06pm, 30 Oct 2024
Each route you plot on Fetch now has a KML button.

As far as I understand it, KML is a file format that lets you draw loads of complicated shit on maps - there's way more to it than the surface I've scratched. But you can also just generate a simple KML file that describes a route.

Take an example, this is the latest iteration of my Escape from Meriden (eeeeeeeep, not long now!!) route:

fetcheveryone.com/routes-view.php?id=1869084

Amongst the buttons above the map are various export options (GPX, TCX and now KML). I might eventually squish them all behind an 'Export' button, to save a bit of space. But anyway, there it is.

No-one asked for this, but I was fiddling around today, and looking for a way that I could check my route for stuff like pavements, shops, and stuff that shows up with satellite imagery that isn't obvious when looking at a drawn map.

I discovered just how brilliant Google Earth is at this. Enormous B*stards. But no really, it's undeniably pretty cool. You can upload KML files to it, so initially I used an online converter to make my GPX file into a KML file describing the route - hence the incentive for me to shortcut that process.

So you download your KML file from Fetch, and upload it here:

earth.google.com
(press the 'New' button, and look for the options to upload KML from your device)

Once it's loaded, you can then zoom in, rotate the map, and follow your route like you're flying over it. It takes a bit of getting used to the controls, but it's totally worth persevering. It renders the buildings and trees in 3D which is a cool bit of maths. And it's shown me that our route goes past the Binley Mega Chippy (ask a teenager), the William Webb Ellis statue, and that there are at least a few potentially serious-looking road/rail projects we cross that I need to check up on to make sure our path is viable.

Triathlon Loitering

1:31pm, 30 Oct 2024
When I was rebuilding the race listings several weeks ago, one of the things I had to deal with was the storage method for triathlon transition times. I realised that I could do a little dig into the data and figure out what typical transition times are. Someone pointed out that these would likely be different for different race lengths - so I set it aside until I had a bit more time to play about.

Obviously there are fewer instances of people doing the longer-distance events, but there's enough data to get some nice numbers.

There are 232 Ironman performances with transition times in the Fetch database. The quickest T1 (swim to bike) is 1m41s, the slowest is 22m48, and the median (middle) time is 8m3s. The bike to run transition (T2) is quicker generally, but the quickest recorded one is 1m45s, and the slowest is 21m45s. The median comes out at 6m34s.

At half ironman distance there are 371 performances, and people go through the transitions a bit quicker. The fastest recorded T1 is 53 seconds, the slowest is 27 minutes on the nose (second slowest is 16m6s, so I guess something went pretty wrong for that slowest transition). The median is 4m24s. The fastest T2 is 46 seconds, the slowest is 12m40s, and the median is 2m45s.

At Olympic distance there are 546 performances, it's even quicker. Median T1 is 2m33s, and median T2 is 1m27s.

If you like that graph, do please share it with anyone who might care :-)

  • I'm in awe of the Ironman entrant who took 22 minutes in T1. If the swim was that exhausting I'd have given up there and then.

  • Did they maybe just forget to lap their watch and several minutes of T1 was actually cycling? I took 12 minutes in T1 in outlaw in 2021 but, in my defence, we were still social distancing then and transition was nearly 1km long!
    Sweetie
    2:42pm, 30th Oct 2024
  • The longest transition I found overall was this three hour gap after a 400m swim - but I am guessing there's a digit in the wrong place: fetcheveryone.com/races/tyne-and-wear-fire-and-rescue-service-triathlon---hebburn-71863
    fetcheveryone

  • I have some of the faster times in this database. You're often at the mercy of a very spread out transition area, but that full distance bike-to-run 1m45 included putting on socks and slapping on sunscreen! For a full distance race, both T1 and T2 are very compact at Roth.

Looking at my race times, I haven't added the 226 ironman I did in 2014, I ought to rectify that.

Tagging in blog comments

5:27pm, 29 Oct 2024
You can now tag people when you comment on a blog. So if I've shared a particularly good knitting pattern or something, you can point a Fetch friend at it by tagging them in the comments. Try it here if you like.

*wonders how this will pan out*

New blog buttons

2:36pm, 29 Oct 2024
For far too long now, the forum posters have had it easy, what with their bold, italic and underline buttons.

But that stops right here, right now (or yesterday, if you happened to spot it).

Now the add blog and edit blog screens have links to the same set of buttons that you find when making forum posts. So you can make stuff stand out, or hide things in spoiler tags, preview your post before you save it, and insert random images of cricket bats.

In fact, I've just made it so that you're not just restricted to cricket bats.

Have at it you lovely people.

EDIT: You can now also tag people in your blogs @Shark the Herald Angel

Disaster Strikes!

9:17am, 28 Oct 2024
Not really. I mean, on the scale of human misery, it's somewhere fairly low down. Depending on how much you like the idea of free pasties.

But Chough Bakery have been in touch to say that the manufacturing side of their business is closing, so they won't be able to provide the pasties for this year's Festive Fetch Calendar.

Putting this out there in case anyone can recommend an alternative; and secondly for your ideas for sports companies that I can contact to fill my other doors. Things a bit sluggish so far :-/

New badges!

11:37am, 24 Oct 2024
I've just added a set of seven new badges for the Conquercise game. I did my usual thing of looking through databases of free pics to find pictures on a theme. But one of the pics I found was AI generated - and it reminded me that Photoshop (literally the only piece of software on my computer that I pay for) has been telling me about its AI capabilities. So I tried it out.

I wanted a pirate theme for the badges - you can collect them by taking ownership of zones that have never been visited before. A lot of the UK has been well-plundered, but there are bits here and there. And if you go anywhere on holiday, it's always a good shout to check for uncharted zones.

Anyway, here's the set of badges:

All images were generated by me describing in a single sentence what I wanted to see, and pressing the refresh button a few times until something came up that I liked. It must suck being an illustrator these days. But it means the badges should be pretty cool from here on.

Play the game here: fetcheveryone.com/game-conq.php

I think that means I could find a square somewhere reachable from home, but as that's between the M3 and M4 west of London, pretty much everywhere has been visited at some point, but maybe not all within the last year?

Bat renovation

9:23am, 23 Oct 2024
I picked up this Powerspot bat for free on my trip to Bristol over the weekend. For non-cricket fans, it's a classic of the eighties and nineties - the bat used by David Gower, Robin Smith, and Mike Atherton to name a few.

This one needed a bit of sorting out, but was in great condition overall. Sometimes the toe of the bat has cracks and chips, but this one looks in good order.

I put a new grip on it, scrubbed the stickers to get the dirt and ball marks off, and removed the scuff sheet. A lot of bats have some sort of protective covering like this over the face, but I much prefer seeing the natural wood. Underneath the fibreglass sheet, the bat had a coating of white paint, but I sanded that off too.

The wood is beautiful, and looks in great condition. A few coats of linseed, and it's ready for its next adventure :-)

  • I think it maybe looks more pronounced in the picture because maybe the bat is on its back. There's a slight asymmetry to it, but very minor - maybe through wear rather than by design.

HQ

10:20am, 18 Oct 2024
I was reading Pedroscalls blog a few days ago, about the big screen he was using to visit Fetcheveryone. So I thought I'd share my new set up.

A few months ago, my 12yo Macbook Pro finally ran into its first argument with software. For several years now, it's refused to update its own operating system, saying that it can't handle the newer versions. That's been fine, because I was happy with it as it was. But then Google Chrome has started saying "you can't have the latest version of Chrome any more, because you don't have the latest operating system". Slowly, inexorably, the software and hardware companies squeeze you towards upgrading.

But I'd been planning to do so anyway. With the boy going off to university, I would no longer regularly be working in two places. The laptop still travels with me pretty much everywhere, in case I need to sit cross-legged somewhere and fix a problem whilst swearing. But the idea of a desktop setup was appealing. And the timing coincided nicely with the 20th anniversary kit, which has given me a bit of spare cash to go towards the upgrade.

So here's the new set up:

Actually, the only new bit is that shiny silver box under the central monitor. The left-hand monitor was being given away in our local village FB group; the one on the right is 17 years old; and I bought the central one about five years ago. Oh, and I suppose the thing that holds the monitors is new too. I was a bit nervous strapping them all on, because initially they were tipping forward :-/ But when I angled the wing mirrors back a bit, it changed the centre of gravity, and now all is well.

The new box is doing well. My old laptop would occasionally get a bit hot and grunty, but the new box is never anything but ice cold. It mocks my efforts to put a strain on it. I am still at the point where I'm keeping the contents tidy. No more folders marked 'slush' full of random crap. No unnecessary software. No perma-grease between the keys. Yet :-)

My background is a panorama I took whilst we were in Jamaica. It looks like the monitors all have different colour settings - and that's because they do - and I CBA to figure out how to match them up:

But here's the original picture - because the sky that day *really was* quite unusual in the way the colour changed. I've blurred my stepson out - not because I don't like his face - it's lovely - but because I haven't asked him whether I can share his pic :-) And Katie is looking at me as if to say "what the heck are you up to, Williams?" :-) But look at the sky! That's the main thing. Amazing, isn't it?

Right, what next?

Up-stickering

1:10pm, 16 Oct 2024
Back in the mid-eighties, when I was a cricket mad kid, I'd go to Cardiff twice a year (Christmas and Easter) to attend a three day training camp run by former Somerset and England cricketer Tom Cartwright (with support from recently retired Glamorgan captain Barry Lloyd).

The same boys (no girls in those days) from all the local clubs would attend, so over several years I got to know some of the characters. And the ones that spring to mind today were the boys from one of the Cardiff clubs who would stuffily declare "The [redacted surname]s *always* use Duncan Fearnley".

I thought they were a bit annoying, but I admit to being a bit jealous of their very shiny kit. I had nice stuff, but they did a good job of making me feel like their stuff was a bit better. And the DF bats were undoubtedly one of the most well-known and popular of the eighties. Even if you only know a bit about cricket, you've probably heard of Ian Botham, Viv Richards, Graeme Gooch, Clive Lloyd. I could go on... Allan Border, Sunil Gavaskar, Martin Crowe... all absolute beasts, and all made sweet sweet music with their DF bats.

These days, DF are rarely (if ever) seen on the big stage. There's too much competition, and it's hard to compete with imported bats that can be a lot cheaper. The players you see on TV often have entirely bespoke bats - but the brands you see have just paid for the stickers.

I must also admit to some late night swiping right - but it's nothing for Katie to worry about (I hope). I've found myself on eBay and Gumtree looking for second-hand classics. I've also been watching a bunch of Instagram videos from people who repair and restore old bats - I'd recommend instagram.com if you want to see a bit of magic.

The renovation game also reveals a penchant for "up-stickering". You can buy stickers for a lot of the major manufacturers, so care is needed when looking for a bargain. But the DF Magnum (preferred bat of the annoying boys) has a distinctive shape on the back that is hard to fake.

Putting all this together (I think you know where this is going), I found a classic DF Magnum on eBay, and got it for £27. It arrived today, to much squealing from me.

It needs a new grip, some attention to the toe, and a general clean up. But I've bounced a ball up and down on it, and the middle feels peachy. And I've spent 35 years thinking that it was quite a heavy bat - but it has a nice light feel to it. I'll post some more pics when I've done some work on it.

Now then... there's a classic Powerspot going for a fiver that I've got my eye on. I could play like David Gower with that, I'm sure.

Then I watched and scored at a local club for years, till uni came...haven't played since, and probably won't again...but still have the thrill of my odd hobby, and revel now in the TV coverage....still dreaming of being able to even bat or bowl just a little bit better than I could at 15....

It's not magic, it's you!

3:27pm, 15 Oct 2024
The work I've been doing on updating the framework for our event listings is bearing fruit :-)

Today I've added the ability to add run, bike and swim events with fixed time rather than fixed distance. And when someone participates in one of these races, they get the chance to record both the distance they achieved, AND the time they used. So if you ran for 11 hours in a 12 hour race, you could record this alongside the distance you achieved.

I've also given you the ability to add events with neither a fixed time nor a fixed distance. These should come in useful for Backyard Ultras, Orienteering, and various 'Last Man Standing' events. Again, participants can record their distance and time once finished.

And I've also made room to store field events (as in 'track and field'). So if you do long, triple, or high jump, pole vault, shot put, javelin, discus or hammer - you can now create an event for it, and record your times. If they prove popular, I'm sure that league tables etc will follow.

So now it's down to you. The Fetch listings don't just magically appear. With the exception of the parkrun listings, which come down a pipe from parkrun HQ, everything in our listings is added by YOU. Or by other people that use the site.

And as I've illustrated in previous blogs, there are plenty of companies out there that want to take a slice of the action when it comes to race listings. See fetcheveryone.com/blog/3/2024/10/489390 for details. But the Fetch listings are free for you, and free for the organisers. The only way I profit from them is if you take a moment and think "this Fetcheveryone website is worth supporting". But you ALL benefit every time a new listing is added. The more we add, the better they become as a resource.

Search here:

My dear old things...

10:54am, 7 Oct 2024
With the boy more or less settled in university, I now have a great deal more free time. For the last 15 years, I have been travelling up to Nottinghamshire every other Wednesday, and staying with him until the Sunday afternoon. But now I have every day and every weekend in Bedfordshire with Katie. It shows how ace she is that we've come through that time when we've had to function separately. It's very nice to be together all of the time, and I'm certainly not missing the driving or organising.

One thing I've been thinking about over the last few years, but which has been impossible, is the idea of playing cricket again. Given the every-other-weekend thing, it was (a) impossible to commit to a team; and (b) would not have been fair on either Katie or The Boy for me to disappear on Saturday or afternoons to do my own thing. But now that there's a bit more free time, I'm hoping to get involved again with a local team. I've been eyeing one up that has first and second XI that play on both Saturdays and Sundays. This hopefully will mean that there's enough variation of ability within the club that I can find a suitable level for me.

I last played properly back in 2003 - shortly before I took up running. I found this old photo of me from around that time, heading back to the pavilion with my bat tucked under my arm. It's funny because it looks like all the fielders in the background are kids - but honestly, the bowler was an adult and that ball was unplayable :-) I've got a picture of my teammate from the same match - and in the background of that one, there's a kid being hoisted triumphantly onto someone's shoulders. It's funny how endless shadow batting in front of a mirror writes cheques that reality can't quite cash.

To save you from at least *some* of my cricket nerdery, I've set up an Instagram account (@ianwilliamscricket) for whatever cricket stuff I want to share - although I can't guarantee that I won't post a bit here too. You can tell I'm a bit excited - it's at least 13 weeks before even indoor nets get started :-)

Copernican Revolution

11:02am, 4 Oct 2024
Nicolaus Copernicus formulated the model of the universe that placed our sun, rather than the Earth at the centre of our solar system. In one moment, everything changed. But also, nothing changed.

I've just uploaded a massive update to our race listings. But hopefully nothing has changed.

I can already see few bits that look a bit wrong, but so far nothing has gone wildly, madly wrong. And there are a few bits that I've put live knowing full well that they'll need some attention, or are only partially done. But overall, I am hoping that things more or less work as they were.

Because I've only changed the race listings, it's tempting just to go for a look at the race finder, and look at a few listings and see if they look about the same. But there are a whole bunch of places that make use of this data in less obvious ways. For example, when you add, edit or view a blog or picture, it can be linked to a race listing. When you play UTMOST or look at benchmarks, race times are pulled in (alongside training data). There's a whole bunch of stuff in your race portfolio, and all the options to insert and update your predicted and actual times. Each listing has a whole load of edit functions, and the ability to copy to a new date, or to add a second distance. Some of the infographics use race listings. The monthly race guide grabs a list of stuff near you. Your user profile summarises your races and personal bests. There are notifications that point you at races you've just done to remind you to review. There are various analysis graphs and summaries that use your race performances to generate stats.

I'll be doing my bit to sanity check all of these different facets. But it would be great if you can be my eyes around the site over the next few days. If you see something that looks wrong, first of all, please don't worry - I have backups! But please report it - I'd much rather 10 people report something than no-one: fetcheveryone.com/feedback-contact.php

Once these changes have all been ironed in smoothly, I can get on with the big stack of feature requests that brought about the need for this change.

A polite no

10:44am, 2 Oct 2024
A couple of weeks ago, I was approached by a company that offers event entry tools for organisers. You know the sort - they handle the transaction when a runner enters a race, taking off a bit for themselves.

In terms of percentages, I guess they are pretty good - they take 3.8%+VAT of the entry fee. So if your race is £20 to enter, they take 91p. They are a relatively small company, with a half dozen employees. And they tell me that some companies can take in the region of 22% of the entry fee! It pays to shop around I guess.

Obviously, they weren't just ringing to check on my wellbeing.

They offered me the chance to add an 'Enter Now' button on some/all of the Fetch race listings. They'd track the amount of entries that this generated, and I would then get paid by the organisers who used their service.

On the face of it, this seems like a simple way for a free site like Fetcheveryone to make a bit of cash. I looked at the stats for my race listings - in particular the amount of clickthrough I generate to organiser websites. It's pretty hefty - typically between 30,000 - 40,000 clicks per month. Not all of those visitors are clicking to book - but in theory Fetch generates a lot of interest and support for these events. If only 1% are clicking to enter, and if I charged 50p for my part in it, that's an easy £150-£200 each month.

But I've always provided these listings and the subsequent traffic for free. And it doesn't sit right with me to charge for it.

My ethos has always been to support the running community, inviting people to donate if they feel I provide a good service. And I see the organisers of events - particularly grass roots events - as being an important part of this community. By effectively taking a cut, I would either be pushing price increases onto runners, or cutting the margins of organisers. I feel as though the cost of organising (and entering) events has increased significantly since I first started Fetcheveryone - so my feeling is that I'd prefer not to be a part of any upward pressure.

That's it really. Have a good one.

  • Wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment. *But* if I could enter via FE and have a "booking fee" that I knew was going to the site, I would definitely choose to enter via here rather than direct with the organiser and don't think I would worry too much about the price of race entries. That said, I'd rather you keep your morals!!

  • If you'd decided to go with it, I'd have looked to see if there was a click-through button on Fetch before entering races through another platform since presumably the fee is going to be applied anyway. And I think being able to enter online is fantastic and don't mind paying the surcharge any more than I used to mind putting a SAE in with my postal entry less than 20 years ago.
I've never come across a surcharge quite as high as 22% but can see how it could happen if there's a minimum fee and the race is an inexpensive local 5k.

  • An interesting one. I applaud what you have decided but agree if you could make it very transparent perhaps as Grast_girl suggests might it be worth looking at? I listed an event on here recently that I organised - I know that at least one of the fairly small number of people who took part did so purely because of the listing here. As a grass roots event the entry fee was £8 or £10 if unattached. The shorter race was £5 & £7. As part of the entry fee runners got a voucher to spend in the pub afterwards of either £3 or £2. I used a small online entry company (who knows maybe the same one). They took 50p per entrant but the entrant paid that rather than the organiser (there was a choice that I could asborb the cost, pass it on to the entrant or split it 50/50.) For 50p on a very reasonable cost and you get at least £2 back at the end I passed it on and this was clear to entrants before signing up. I wonder if there is a way they could make it like justgiving etc where when the person enters they get the option how much they also give to justgiving so that if people choose to they can add a bit more that you get?

Pass the spanner

2:45pm, 1 Oct 2024
*emerges from the coding room, covered in soot*

I've been working on the update to the race listing architecture pretty much continuously since I blogged about it a week ago. It's a hefty project by my standards :-)

I wanted to try to explain what I've been doing - if only so I can think it all through. If you haven't read my previous blog, it'd be best if you have a quick squizz at that before continuing with this one. I'll be asking questions later :-)

The first job was to build a new database structure that will be capable of holding all the existing race listings (and the times, notes, reviews etc that you record for each race you've done). (@shyfire - it's still a relly D :-) )

Then I built a piece of code that would copy all the existing data into the new structure. So now I have two copies of the data - the old existing version, and the new version. The new version needs re-making every so often, because every time you folks update something in the old version, the new version becomes slightly more out of date. It's not too big of a problem though, I just run the code that generates the new version every so often.

Next step was to amend the chunk of code through which everything relating to race listings passes. You can think of it as a back office. All the pages you view on the site will phone up this back office, and say "can we have all of Diogenes' 10k times please?", or "can you get me all the ultra marathons within 50 miles of Shitterton please?", or "change the name of the Big Northern Run to the Little Southern Walk please" and the back office goes and rummages round the database and does what's been asked of it.

It was 2584 lines of code, but the updated version has just 1935 lines. I would attribute most of this reduction to the new database structure. It's amazing how many workarounds and ugly bits of code you have to write to make something fit into an ugly database structure.

So now I have a parallel set of data in the new format, and a parallel way of speaking to it.

There are 79 different pages on the site that talk to the race listings back office. There are 21 other back offices that also ring it up from time to time (e.g. the blogs allow you to connect your blog to a race listing). There are also 8 scheduled tasks that run every week that talk to the back office (like updating our parkrun list). And a further 9 'guide books' - full of commonly-requested or complex information that the back office publishes periodically to avoid getting overwhelmed.

I've basically split these into "stuff that makes the data change", and "stuff that just asks to see the data". I've started migrating the latter across to use the new system; and will then try to do the former in one big chunk.

So at some point this week, things may get a little hairy. But please don't worry if all your data disappears for a short while - it's all backed up safely :-)

Right then, pass me that spanner. No, the big one - I need to hit something with it.
