I can't remember how I taught it to Wanda now. I have never had to use it 'for real' as in if she was about to run onto the road and I suspect if she was chasing a rabbit or bird I'd have no chance although I did once use it when out on an off lead walk when she spotted another dog a field away and set off towards it.
I think we may have used a long lead to start with and probably at very short distances too to start with. At my current class they encourage you to train the command with the dog coming towards you, but I almost always use it to stop her when she is going away from me as I didn't want to confuse the recall command.

I can't properly remember either! I know she got it very quickly which means we probably taught it in conjunction with ball games. Definitely use the traffic policeman like hand signal, and the voice needs to be firm and more assertive than usually/often.
We taught it with Jess coming towards us, but it works when she's running off - and that's when I 've had most chance to use it.

I'm finding this really helpful. I'm quite excited about puppy classes now
ION having left Ernie alone for a couple of minutes on a few occasions today he has just managed a couple of minutes without crying like his world has come to an end. I am hoping he is beginning to understand that we will come back.

A really good hint about leaving dogs alone (you perhaps already know it - but still) is DON'T make a big deal of leaving. This is particularly important when you are leaving the house for any length of time. Giving an all absorbing treat (a stuffed Kong) for instance is good - but it's best just to put it down and head off.
No fond goodbyes or 'be goods!'
And NEVER look back....

I read that just today Sharkie. I did introduce the kong for the first time today and left him for a couple of minutes. The kong was a hit. I just popped a couple of bits of cheese and his normal food (which he still won't actually eat out of his bowl - sigh). Was it on here I saw recipes for kong filling treats?

Anything your dog will eat can go in the Kong, HP.
We were sternly advised by one of the vets Fetch ( I had started hand feeding Jess - briefly) NOT to pander to fussy eating. He'll eat out of his bowl if there's no alternative!

If the dog doesn't eat out of the bowl take it up after a few minutes. No more food until next meal time. Repeat until dog is hungry and eats out of bowl.

We've always given Wanda a Kong on leaving but I did always say 'bye bye' as I gave it to her. I hadn't ever realised the significance of this and that she must have been interpreting those words as 'yes I am leaving you now' until one day out on a walk she was chasing rabbits or birds or something with no intention of coming back to me whatsoever despite calling, whistling etc. In exasperation I eventually shouted 'OK I'm going home, bye bye Wanda' and she returned to my side like a shot

Yes when Floss was being a picky-eating puppy we were told to take the food up if she hadn't eaten it within 10 minutes, and not to put food down again until her next official feeding time. It worked
As regards 'Stop', we started with very short distances and gradually increased it. I'm trying to remember Lisa's 'rule of three' for teaching any command - I think it's time, distance, difficulty (not sure about the last one). So for 'wait', don't increase the time *and* the distance at the same time.
Now...*embarrassed smiley*... Flossie *still* drags me across the field to greet her pals at dog school Yes, she is very nearly four years old and has the Gold Award. I blame the owners

LD - I think Mrs Vanoord's (?) advice was to both you and me at the time!
