Learning that there was another way to do planks that didnt involve resting on your elbows was a revelation to me. I always found that elbow based planks hurt my arms and shoulders before I felt any effect on my core.

Is this one of those "must do every day without fail" type things? I'm talking about core-work in general I guess.

My coach reckons 2-3 times a week is sufficient for most runners. If you want to do more thats fine but better to stick to it rather than set yourself every day and fail!

Herman, just think of it as any other set of muscles. You wouldn't do deadlifts and squats everyday, you wouldn't bench press everyday, so don't work your core everyday.
Also, what Curly said (if her coach is still who I think it is then I've cribbed a lot of stuff off him too, including this very routine)

All muscles need time to recover, especially from resistance and isometric type work (which is basically what most core work is). In fact, muscles only get stronger during the recovery after a workout, if you don't give them that time they'll never get stronger.
