It was my first senior game, of any gender. Two of the visiting side came up to me after the third half and asked how they go about getting certified as referees in NL, I referred them to either their contact for setting up this games or their their local club, and they said 'Thanks, we just want to make sure you we never get reffed by you again'. They can fuck all the way off back to SA, and keep fucking off until they've circumnavigated the globe at least twice. No ref is perfect, and I made it clear to their captain from the outset that because this was a 'friendly' game (and my first) I would be strict on safety but otherwise look to play advantage and mostly be about maintaining flow. And they still bloody won. Knobs to them, I say. Big shiny brass ones. |

To be fair, the rest of the visiting side were very pleasant, and the chaps from my home club who are usually the harshest critics were very complementary. There nicest thing I heard, from the head coach of our men's side (who I usually find to be a bit of a cock), was that he thought I found exactly the right balance between listening to the players and saying 'I'm the referee here, what I say goes and you can shut up.' My own feeling was that I let things go equally on either side it hey didn't make a material difference to the game, but I called safety issues or genuinely foul play. And when I didn't see exactly what had happened, I asked the players to tell the truth, and believed them. Both ways (mostly that seemed to go against the Vets, and they were fine with it,). There was one maul that collapsed and I couldn't tell whose fault it was, so I awarded a scrum to the team who had attacking momentum, which happened to be the Vets. Later one of the Vets players admitted they had collapsed it and the call should have been for the visitors, but it was too late to do anything about it's, and the Vets had failed to do anything useful with it anyway. Earlier in the game I'd given the other team then benefit of the doubt when the ball popped out of a tackle and they picked it up and carried on to score and they swore it hadn't come off their player. I know it's irrational and disproportionate to need so upset by those two assholes when pretty much everyone else was positive, but screw them. |

It's a tricky line. I used to referee football. Well done and hope it didn't put you off!

GMA I have a race this evening - the first of the club's handicap series. It is likely to be raining hard by the time the race starts. Better than being too hot, IMO. |
