Have you tried assaulting it (by which I mean applying firmly for a few seconds) with a hot teaspoon? I read somewhere that this interrupts the reaction which causes the itching somehow, and even if it's just a placebo effect it seems to be work on me.

thanks fraggle I got bitten on a run the other day - it was inconveniently the same place as the cuff of my bike shorts so itched every pedal stroke
