Can you use the Mamod to power something else, or is it just a thing in its own right? I remember going to a fete (church fair?) when I was young and there was an old boy with a table covered in wee steam engines, clattering and shoogling about. It remember it felt like they were alive. |

Googling took me to Wikipedia earlier, for Mamod. And there was a crossover Mamod + Meccano! A steam engine to power Meccano moving parts. Yes, all those old companies have interesting and slightly sad histories. Also Triang / Hornby too. Though Hornby have managed to keep themselves going, just. G |

Certainly can Angus. Mamod make work stations such as hammers, polishers, presses you could belt off a Mamod. And Mecanno had their own steam engine called Mech1. Here's a very interesting site of the old Meccano magaizne that use to be published. It's truly amazing. meccano.magazines.free.fr When I look at publications of the year I was born I can't believe I'm that old. |

I’ve just lost an hour buried in Meccano magazine, c.1969! |

I remember my brother had kit similar to this meccano.magazines.free.fr but it was to design a tracked ambulance.

Weekend update - a double, with both Friday night and Sunday night indoor GT12 racing. Was reasonably good. I had a problem with my car pulling to the right, progressively getting worse. Eventually got help with that in last couple races of Sun night. Results aren't up yet, but I was ahead of another newish guy (who just crashes all over the place, in contrast to my more conservative, go slow but try not to crash approach!) but behind the 11 year olds! Maybe going up for 5th last to 7th last or something! This is progress! There were a few interesting other classes of cars: amainhobbies.com - LMP, which is a super high performance version of what we do (but not many cars doing it). - Buggies, as discussed before - but with lowered and stiffened suspension, smoother tyres and shock towers and other sticky out parts covered up to avoid damaging the racing surface (or a human being!) in event of crashes) - and a Tamiya touring class (slower than the GT12s but more affordable. Don't actually know why the guy is trying that out). Still think our 12th scale touring cars look the biz though! kamtec.co.uk Solution to dragging right was to loosen the servo arm slightly. Before that though it was to try swapping wheels round (good idea anyway, to avoid lopsided wear - most tracks are clockwise. The top guys only run their tyres for a couple of races and replace them! ), tightening opposite rear corner suspension to rebalance front etc. Sunday is indoor buggies in the first race of a series. It's all day 10-4 and MrsS(rrr) is a bit annoyed because we have visitors. I claim that I had booked the race series before she booked the visitors! G |

Cool. Is that Meccano Thunderbird kits WW? Wow, didn't even know there was such a thing. Is it current or a vintage kit? G

The kit is from 2015 HG and still available as Meccano Maker System. It's one of the last sets that uses metal parts before the new generation of plastic sets. The move to plastic parts upset a number of purists but these were old men wearing sandals and socks who make incredible, beautiful, complicated models. How long Meccano survives is anyone's guess but a new generation has to be found. |

Gosh, I didn't even know Meccano had stopped being metal. Wasn't that its only USP really? There are loads of plastic building sets. Shame. I'm with the socks and sandals brigade! G
