Two more Wainwrights ticked off for me today, Broom Fell & Whinlatter, would have been three but went to the Birkett for Graystones and missed the Wainwright 🙄😩

Graystones is tricky isn't it? Quite a distance between the two tops. There is another Birkett over there as I remember, is it the "other" Kirk Fell?

Yes need to focus a bit more in future. The other Birkett is down as Kirk Fell (Lorton). Will pick that up with Graystones on a future visit.

I'd be curious to know how you planned your route. Presumably you went from Broom Fell to Graystones then down the steep descent to the pass and then up through the forest trail before working your way up to the Whinlatter Wainwright? I haven't found a decent line yet.

Planned a loop but started with that climb up to Graystones! I’d spotted SimonF had done it ACW. I plotted Broom / Lord’s / Tarbarrel using Outdooractive, forcing the bit up the track by the MTB route. It plotted to the wall below the Wainwright but wanted to double back. I went west from there as I’d seen the other end of a track, Simon’s route went east (comes out by a rusty tank?). Somehow I plotted a shortcut to the bottom track along a wall which wasn’t pleasant, to much bramble and spiky tree branches!

Thanks for posting that. We had exactly the same issue and in fact did a very similar loop to you, going through the Tarbarrel gate and MTB tracks. We actually started from the Hobcarton Plantation car park, meaning we had a bit of a trek up the road at the end. You know, looking at this route it strikes me that I bet loads of people go to that big ornamental cairn at Broom Fell and think they're at the summit, there should be a sign pointing back over the wall!

Yes I didn’t expect such a substantial cairn on what’s not the peak! Coming round clockwise the higher ground does stand out.

We had a little difficulty finding a route to tick off some of that group - in the end we parked at the bottom of Barf and did an out and back of Barf, Lords Seat and Broom Fell

I agree, the view from Barf punches well above its weight.

The "normal" (ie. not Slape Crag) route up Barf has been closed for several months and for obvious reasons I've been watching carefully because it could really scupper things when the weather gets warmer. I had a quick squint last week and it looks like the work there is drawing to a close and it's now possible to climb via Beckstones Gill, but you do have to clamber over some big tree trunks. The LDNPA planning notice stated that it would be complete as soon as possible, but is not end-dated.
