Jenkyns’ apology is a belter. Well not really an apology tbh.

I'm totally against Brexit, but in truth, hasn't that ship set sail?

Isn't Starmer and Labour's position a pragmatic way forward?

Such an example of loss of self control surely indicates that Ms Jenkyns is scarcely ready for the back office, let alone high office.

I think there's a view that it would be better if Starmer stood up and said before every sentence on Europe "I wouldn't have to say this if we were still in the EU, and that's what I hope for, but...."

I'd like that too, but I'd also like to win the lottery.

The problem with that nuance is that the people who want to hear "rejoining the EU" will hear that.

The issue with Brexit is that many are single issue, low propensity voters.

So anything that Starmer does that sounds even vaguely like "rejoin" will increase the likelihood of these voters turning out and voting for the Tories

If the ukip vote was splitting the Tory vote (and mopping up these low propensity voters too), it wouldn't matter, but their collapse means they all vote Tory.

And that damages labour.

Now would PR change this. Yes and No.

But we are in the situation we're in. There's no point in discussing counterfactuals.

Exactly this. Brexit for a significant proportion of the population is black and white. If you take that out of the equation, what have the Tories got?

Don't Partners pay capital gains tax rather than the regular tax you and I pay? Not a tax expert, but assumed that would be how it works as they are more a slice of the company rather than a normal employee. There are lots of reasons why some jobs pay more than others - deciding how fair that is depends very much on your values and outlook, but doesn't really depend on how hard you work - plenty of very poor people work all hours. But anyway I think the focus on the left should be bringing people up rather than bringing people down. The old class war stuff is a huge turn off for swathes of voters.

Partners pay income tax on profits. Some of that may be capital gain for the sale of the expatriate tax practice but normal share of profits in a partnership is on income rates.

I wasn’t suggesting that higher wages comes from more hours. It was more a reaction to the earlier post suggesting the there was a limited contribution of career. I do agree about bringing people up- especially with the cost of living crisis and the huge impact it’s having on a lot of the population. A flat rate rebate to me on my energy cost is a waste of government spending is should be better targeted to those who need it more.

A change of topic to World politics, pre-Covid the last holiday I was meant to go on was trekking in the Lebanon, explosion in Beirut, economy knackered. Post Covid, a change of venue.

Guess where?

Sri Lanka.

I’m beginning to think I’m a jinx.

Anyone want to nominate a country they want brought to its knees?

11. Babble Hypothesis:
According to multiple studies, what best predicts whether someone becomes a leader? Their experience? Their IQ?
No!
The amount of time they spend talking. It doesn't even matter what they say, just how much they say it.
We suck at picking leaders.

Applicable to the Tory leadership race?
