Does to a right winger with stuff to hide. Deflect the attention with other shite, and they'll miss the important stuff (as detailed above). I think I'm just saying what Richmac is saying above in slightly less historical terminology. I do think he might have meant "give", but I'm not a classical Roman History scholar, so I may be wrong on that particular quote. |

A depressing but realistic article by John Harris. The progress previously made is being undone by this government. Food banks are a growth industry. The Tories are probably keen for a return to Victorian levels of poverty and the poor house. Tomorrow, 1000s of people who have covid symptoms should be self isolating but won’t as SSP is a pittance or they can’t get it. Make it equal the living wage and reclaimable from the government. For the common good. theguardian.com |

Barbados has its last day under a monarchy today. Let’s see how many other countries follow suit and reject the rotten system. |

Thanks for bringing up Barbados Fields. I missed that; it makes me happy and I hope there are many more to follow. Of course, the whole Caribbean History is nothing to be happy about. I'm ashamed of my country's history. You could say that no-one can change the past now - true but reparations on a truly significant scale would seem to be a decent start. I think a lot of countries will hang on until the Queen dies and then then declare themselves a republic.

Shame the UK can’t do that too.

I had relatively high hopes for the unpopularity of Charles but British republicanism would have to be at a high ebb at just the right time for it to come off...

I would really fear that if the Queen popped her royal clogs under this Government, they'd just install some Tory as head of state, or maybe even elevate BoJo to lifetime president or something.
