Give me a couple of days TRO, I’ve done quite a lot of work on the birthplace of different squads. Was looking for that pacific islands harvesting, and it is there but not quite to the extent I was expecting. Japan was very multicultural, and Wales had a lot of English born players. |

Interesting Cheg... I tried to do my own quick review in the past half an hour or so, mostly based either on the birthplace listed on the official RWC website squad pages, supplemented by Wikipedia. A few surprising things I found:- - Tonga include 9 players born in Australia or New Zealand. But Australia and New Zealand "only" include 5 players born in Tonga. Who is doing the harvesting? - Scotland include at least 5 players born in England (I didn't check Wales)... are they harvesting the English? My research led me to the conclusion that International eligibility rules, and socio/economic immigration of families with young children, makes identifying trends with any degree of certainty very difficult and/or time consuming. |

Yeah it was similar sources to you. The island nations generally seemed to be residency as you might expect. The Wales, Ireland, England, Scotland mix is lots of grandparents or parents. Almost every nation I found had at least one Tongan, those guys get around. |

I have friends, one English, one South African, living in Dubai, with a daughter born in China. The sporting world is her oyster.

I don’t think place of birth is necessarily an indication of nationality, certainly not within the UK where the concept of separate nationalities is very dodgy indeed. Very few countries assign nationality based solely on birth. USA and … ? |

ok wikipedia tells me it's common across the American continent generally, not just the USA. In Europe, only Latvia. Fiji is maybe the most significant rugby nation where it applies.

Take a minute with me to enjoy the Guardian's rugby home page, just before the Welsh team was announced for this Saturday's game. I make that 20 articles, not one of them about Wales. They have a short team selection article up now, but as a Wales supporter, this is an all-too common phenomenon. |

Guess it's the English Guardian, lol. If they drop Ford, I hope Fiji show them up. |
