We had a lovely family weekend at local loch on Saturday - my sis wanted us to get together, my wife managed to find time away from horses, and my mum decided she was up for it too. So by 14.00 we had an 86 year old granny, me and my sis, our partners and the 4 yr old. We brought the canoe and the two paddle boards. All 3 craft were deployed! Sis and I went out with niece, who was very good in the middle and enjoyed it. Then niece came on paddleboard with me, not too far, and my sis and wife tried standing up on the paddleboards too, while I held them. Not sure why people find standing up on a paddle board so hard. Maybe I've just got good balance, but I stood up on them straight away last year and can happily do 5km on the in an hour, even with a breeze to paddle against. Anyhoo, finally, the old mother was helped from her wheelchair to join in the canoe! She had been in before a couple years ago when we first got it. She used to canoe in a 4 or 6 or 8 person canoe when she was school and college age. My wife was laughing as she sort of mimed paddling away from shore, the I took over and we shot away! But she loved it, as the wind dropped round the island and it was nice and warm. She saw the island landing point for first time and could see the route she used to walk around the loch in her walking days. She declared it her best day out in ages and we declared it a very successful day all round! Here have a pic, G |

There were reports of blue green algae in some of the loughs round here so I am reluctant to go out.

Sounds like a great expedition, HappyG(rrr). We explored the upper part of the Teign Estuary on Sunday - not the most picturesque piece of water in Devon, but the closest to home. Our next kayaking day will take us to the Dart Estuary. |
