That sounds like it’ll suit us very well.

Synge, I struggle to get anyone to commit to anything longer than 45 mins in reality. Hence the light quickies we run with (Dominion, Fire Tower, Dixit, Codenames, Ticket to Ride at a push). If my boys want long sessions they revert to 40k with miniatures. We do have the new edition Blood Bowl (150 mins) but if you do 7's rather than the full game, you can get down to 45-60mins. My KPIs for games at the moment are How long is the rulebook. (shorter tends to be better) How long does it take to setup and takedown (quicker tends to be better) How long does it take (more games in an afternoon session the better) Also not really a KPI but I prefer outcomes not to be obvious early doors (hate games where the second half is going through the motions to get a definitive result). I get some people love immersive experiences but I do not have a gaming group and when I did, the wargame type games tended to get overly competitive. What was supposed to be some fun and downtime turned into an unenjoyable afternoon or evening. Perhaps a wrong group but it stopped floating my boat. I also have MiniGolfDesigner, another KickStarter, but havent persuaded the family to play. It does work as a solo play, which is the only mode I've played at the moment. It mixes tile laying with loss minimisation. Balancing different scoring scenarios in your head whilst selecting and laying tiles is the key challenge. I liken it to a 50 piece jigsaw puzzle on steroids, with no picture. Keep sharing, always keen to hear personal recommendations of others. |

My attempt at the 4 stages of the Tour de Yorkshire 2019, with the last 60km from the race stage (ala the game rationale) with the app route designation. It has the terrain card codes for you, for those interested. Have fun |

Oh yes, that’s even better than I’d hoped. Once we’re done with Scout camp this weekend I’m going to get that sorted.

FTR - how did you get on with the app for recording results at the end of each stage? I ended up printing out the paper sheet and using that for our 5 stage epic.

I thought it was ok, it gave a slightly different result to what I expected but it worked. The only issue I really had is that it is completely intolerant of errors from memory. It does give you are you sure warnings? So it isn't terrible just not as good as it could be. However saying that someone programmed it and passed it on for free. For that I am extremely grateful. Pen and paper seems a bit of a faf, if I'm honest. My honest advice is just scenario a series of races, input the data and get familiar with it before using it with a gaming session. It would take the pressure of you and you will look so professional. MT the UCI Flamme Rogue Commissaire. Have fun |

Minigolf Designer boardgamegeek.com Another kickstarter I backed and received just before Christmas. Finally convinced the family to try it today. It is a tile layer and has 7 different scoring conditions (land, par, circuit, client A whim, client B whim, speed and fun [people]). You select your own land space, there is a common pair of clients (those 3 elements provide the variety) a common rationed tile set where the value of the tile you picked last time determines tile picking order next round. Overall after rules explanantion we took about an hour, it was relatively fast paced, little downtime and final scoring was pretty close despite having completely different strategies. It also has a solo mode, beat a score with a different mechanism for tile availability which works. Overall a good bit of fun, not very strategic but very thematic. I think they are releasing it to retail soon, they do direct sales but have no stock, they might do it via Kickstarter again. Components were very good and it will get to the table again. The only downside is that it does require a bit of space and it is weighty (just over 2kgs). Some images lifted from Boardgamegeek, only becuase I wasn't bright enough to take a picture of our finishing position.[IMAGE163603][IMAGE163602] |

Also picked up Under Falling Skies which is a solo dice rolling worker placement game. The family all think it looks like space invaders, which is very apt. It is a pleasant way to while away 30mins. Longevity is built in by having 5 increasing levels of difficulty, 3 different start bases and a replayable campaign mission. I have had 6 playthroughs, the first was awkward just because you need to familarise yourself with the rules. The following playthroughs have been easier. Played 3 at base level (0) won, 1 at level 1 won and 2 at level 2, both lost. Needs a bit of space but it is something that replayed and you could have a co-op experience, if you wanted. Available through retail,I picked mine up from Wayland Games. Recommended if you want a planning dice rolling dice placement experience. |
