Curly45 - Thanks for sharing lol

GFA times are based more on numbers of potential participant than any sense of equality in difficulty. Girls running a sub 3:15 are pretty much on the Champs start though that seems to have been changed to sub 3:14 not like that minute makes that much difference to numbers. (Mens went down to sub 2:40 and sub 3 for GFA, +5 mins @40 and same again every 5 yrs).

Girly GFA is soft as .... and you know it.

Can of worms opened :-D

Even the excellent women runners I know say their GFA is soft compared to the men's.

I think based on age grading it’s (often considerably) harder for the men up to about 60yo, but harder for the ladies after that age.

(I haven’t checked the figures in the table in the above link).

I think any woman that runs sub 3:14 more than deserves her place on the champs start.

I agree the GFA times are hard, the one for M50-54 is the hardest if you are just under 55 from my earlier calcs (the table in Big_G's link is correct for WAVA but uses the lower age of the range). I think this just reflects that a lot of 40-60 year old males are still quite keen to run marathons.

B Rubble, yes, I wasn't implying anything about who does or does not deserve their place, and I agree with you. I was just trying to point out that the broad discussion around the mens times being easier than the women isn't correct for all age groups, at least not based on age grades. I don't think we know the allocation of places per age group, do we, but it is a numbers game for London. I.E., in order for the organisers to make up the 3000 GFA limit for each gender, the times are adjusted accordingly. Why they have limited it to 3000 and how they allocate those 3000 places is their decision, and it has always been my view that they can organise the race however they see fit.

Wasn't aware of the change verses WAVA % for the older ages, there must have been a rapid older lady at some point (comparatively speaking).

I’m guessing the numbers broadly follow demand. Lots of v quick men wanting to run champs and they want equal male and female representation.

I agree with you BigG - it’s their race and they can impose whatever rules they see fit.

I think given that men need 2:40, 3:14 for women on champs start is extremely soft! But I also think that people close to the threshold for that or the GFA levels can't really complain at missing out, it's not like any of us really are much good or that the race will be weaker for our absence. Their race, their rules.
