Todays shift out of the way means 29 working days left which include the last 8 night shifts I ever EVER intend to do ... 30th July will be my retirement day after 7 years as a silversmith and 29.5 years chasing bad guys. My intention is to get out and run more and smell the countryside .. and do some part time stuff where people are actually happy to see me turn up at their house ! .. that's going to be a real novelty. |

Interesting post TROSaracen - my final years are quite the opposite. I’m very busy and people give me things to do and projects and people to look after. But the feeling grows that if I didn’t do any of it nobody would be particularly bothered. Which is soul crushing in its own quiet way. |

Sigh
I've made the mistake of picking up my work mobile this morning to check if I'd had any messages since I legitimately finished at 2pm yesterday, and ended up firing off a quick reply to a sales rep in the States to confirm that yes, I would finish my review of something next week; apparently the Belgian customer is looking to place an order with our Polish team and I'm the logjam. That's the trouble these days, there's always someone in another country who's waking up as you're finishing who needs something. It's not more interesting when working with folks from other countries, it's just 'same shit - different time zone'. I'm only relaxed about it because I've planned my escape |

I like doing my volunteering stuff. Whilst I could give it up and "someone else will step up to do it" I could say that of every working job I ever had. The graveyard is full of people who were "indispensable". So I do a bit of volunteering here and there and that fulfils me enough.

It's not more interesting when working with folks from other countries, it's just 'same shit - different time zone'. I'm only relaxed about it because I've planned my escape I can really empathise with that but luckily NOT time zone slaved. We became veery mobile with personal laptops and mobile phones freeing us from police stations ... but his progressed ( for mine, and other specialist posts ) to checking in out of work time and then fretting over stuff that really... really could wait. connectivity is brilliant ... until it takes over your life. I'm not going to miss that part of the job at all |
