BTW, just for the record there is no doubting Ian Levine's undoubted and extensive knowledge of soul music, he has impeccable taste. One day I may recount the "Wrong Side of Town" story to you all.
The first pub I ever frequented regularly had a gay landlord and an interesting mixed clientele. I have fond memories of the time and some of those records. I don’t want to drift too far off topic though
After he came out Levine became very camp, this was fine in places like Heaven but in rough-hewn Northern Soul clubs I think that many found this a bit uncomfortable. He always claimed he was "straight acting", but it wasn't really the case. Personally, I never found this facet of his character to be a problem but I know a lot struggled. I guess it shows how we've moved on in the last 25 years or so.
DT - absolutely, back on topic I may still post a few more Levine creations though, some were rather good. Does anyone remember those Ebony Alleyne tracks I posted some while back? He was behind those.
I don't know if you noticed but that Betty Turner track was distributed by Dore. Dore was a curious label, I don't think they had any mainstream success at all, but notwithstanding that had a good number of releases - very much like Shrine I guess, not quite as rare though. DT would be interested to know that his fave Rita & The Tiaras track was released on Dore
Anyhow, here is without question the rarest record that came out on Dore, I don't think I've heard of an issue copy being found - those that exist are all demos. No less an authority than John Manship stated it was one of his "Holy Grail" records! "Ship of Fools" by Ray Marchand
I thought I might indulge of my "other" passion for your entertainment
Feel free to post, but please do try and keep it soulful. No funk or ska please! I maintain an off-line list of all the tracks posted, if you would like a copy please feel free to fmail me.
