Will check that out NE, thanks. Bit of a bop happening earlier, roof down, volume up, beautiful day, lovely countryside and little traffic and Curtis Mayfield Move on Up arrives on the radio. Mrs DB on the high notes, me a bit lower down in the register belting it out for the gulls and crows lol
I've seen The Jam 3 times including a secret gig. They're my fave band of all time. Was completely gutted when they split and remember exactly where I was at the time.
Weller's opinions resonate with mine and he's definitely someone I'd like to meet for lunch to talk over life and things. John Peel was my previous No 1 lunch date
Just back from a race and relaxing with a bit of Black Cat radio. Have we had this one before? It's a lovely piece of modern soul from Gene Chandler, I'm not actually sure of the year .... maybe late 70s/early 80s, but a terrific vocal. What do you think??
Remember that "broad church" that we've spoken about so often. This was one of the biggest dance records ever to be played in the rarified atmosphere of Wigan Casino, I've seen some truly mesmerising dancers stomping to this. It's the underlying, slightly funky beat that imparts the magic. I love the bit where the tempo changes up, that used to send them crazy
Gene C. - Some Stevie influence in the keyboard breaks - always a good feature! The orchestration is expansive, almost 'big band' in character. And a sax solo in keeping with the title.
The 2nd tune is dipped heavily in soul, especially the vocals, and the bonkers Hammond break is ace!
The Gene Chandler reminds me of Lamont Dozier. Great voice and a really great groove. Your tempo too Second tune is amazing. Funk rock. Two belters and neither obvious ‘Northern’ to the uninitiated
Secret gig - Tues 9 Dec 1980. The date's engraved on my heart.
I was a 16 year old at college. An older student; who I think knew the local support band; was talking about tickets going on sale the next day for a secret Jam gig at Bristol's Locarno, a small venue in the Mecca complex which also housed a skating rink and a small soul club called Raquel's.
I was beside myself and waited anxiously in the refectory for my friend Rich to come out of his lecture before rushing up to him with the news. He was also a massive Jam fan. We arranged to get in the queue the next day at the ticket office an hour before opening and got a couple of tickets.
The small venue was packed. As always, I managed to get to the front but I was one of the youngest and smallest there and got squashed a few times in crowd surges. A lovely older punk couple kept an eye on me, as I nearly got winded at one point!
I thought I might indulge of my "other" passion for your entertainment
