Just playing some old favourites here and Marlena Shaw's version of "Wade in the Water" came up, I've always preferred this version to the ubiquitous Ramsey Lewis track, it seems much more uplifting and a proper NS dance track, I love it. What do you think FE NS fans?? :-)

p.s. RS - what did you think of the Johnny Wyatt track? I thought that one would have been right up your street :-)

I like both versions ... but the Ramsey Lewis Trio is my favourite instrumental track ever, so obvs that's the preference for me.

Johnny Wyatt - it's got everything! I love a bit of whooping, improv and general woh-oh-ohs. For the same reason, I like the Dee Dee Sharp track.

I can really hear also in the Johnny Wyatt track; his influence on Paul Weller. I can also hear snatches of this track in modern bands - almost an early form of sampling but more nicking.

I would love to think that Paul Weller had actually heard that Johnny Wyatt track :-)

That Marlena Shaw tune ^ is bursting with musical energy and 'out there' vocals. :)

Paul Weller is a big northern soul fan. It was him being interviewed on radio 1 and playing some of his favourite tracks that made me explore and properly discover northern soul.

Bit late on following up on this .... yes, PW is definitely a NS/Motown fan and I'd totally agree that you can hear the influence in his music. I don't think he gets properly "down in the weeds", but then I expect he doesn't have the time in his life for that kind of obsessive behaviour. Although I don't agree with some of his more extreme personal views, I do like his music and think he's extremely talented - one of my claims to fame is that I have actually seen The Jam live back in the 70s and got all their autographs after the concert :-)

I have been having a bit of a musical morning here at Chez Exile, a friend of mine from Wigan days is a record dealer and runs a channel on MixCloud. He produces a weekly NS show and - God forbid - throws in the occasional Ska and Reggae show (he's from the Black Country, they like that kind of stuff there). If you can be bothered to create a MixCloud account I strongly recommend following his shows, his username is MayfairMenthol and his company Planet Records. Worth the effort :-)
