To be fair mine has never really been that bad. Uncommunicative, but not generally ill-behaved. He's had a steady girlfriend for the past 2 years who has had a definite civilizing effect.

Housework/clearing up after oneself has been a constant battle though.

My daughter is 14 and while she is a lot more argumentative now she isn't all that bad at all. I'm not sure if its the calm before the storm as I was really good until I turned about 17!!

My eldest is 21 and has been away from home since he started uni at 18. He was a bit moody at times but I'm sure it wasn't this bad. Although you do forget in time (just like every stage) and now I have got two in the same stage with no distraction :(

As Mark twain said, "when I was 14 I thought my old man was so stupid I couldn't bear to be in the same room as him. When I reached 21 I was amazed by how much he had grown."

Mine are 14 (son) and nearly 17 (daughter) - communication can be tricky at times - in that I genuinely don't understand some of the mumbling! I always said I'd leave the parenting to my husband at this stage as he's a secondary school teacher & therefore far more experienced at the age group. My son is still relatively human (if larger and smellier!), the main issue with daughter is an incredibly fragile self-esteem and the fact that it takes her at least an hour to get ready to go anywhere - as she is not a morning person this makes the start of each school day rather stressful... On the plus side they are good company, their opinions about life can be hugely refreshing and being embarrassing parents can be quite good fun!

Will watch and learn as mini1 becomes a teenager in March. She did tell me last week she won't be a grumpy teenager. I played her the first sketch of Enfield's Kevin the teenager which she thought was quite amusing!

my eldest is 14 at the end of this month. I think he is practising being a proper teenager at the moment - breaking me in gently :-) but there are always the usual dramas about getting the dishes done etc.....
