Anyone running in Glasgow this weekend? Half marathon for me. I put 2:10 as predicted time (ambitious by a mile!) and I’m in pink wave which I don’t really get but never mind. Love this race!

No Glasgow for me. If I had been running better, I might have been tempted by the 10K - although at £28, probably not.

Speaking of me running badly, I did the inaugural HamilTEN at the weekend. Some things were fine; others, not so much. My main issue was with the course which I viewed as just unsuitable for sending near 600 people round. A dart down a steep grass banking has no place in a road race anywhere, never mind at around 500m (and back up with around 500m to go). The paths following were much too narrow AND had extra wide lampposts on them, compounding the situation. Then there was another completely unnecessary section on grass when runners came into Strathclyde Park (on the road on the return leg) and then round the parkrun course which really was not wide enough for the two way traffic (compounded by some outbound runners running on the right and forcing the oncoming leaders onto the grass). The water station was also a shambles, understaffed and operated by filling plastic cups - I would have had to stand and wait if I had wanted water. I hope someone tidied up the cups strewn along the path after. Oh, and some of the dourest marshals I have even seen (not all by any means, but some.)

And when I approached the finish (I didnae take that long :-o), prizegiving was already underway!

The start of the race was also delayed by thirty minutes by a freak incident. A few minutes before the off, a truck hit a telegraph poll about 200m in and brought the lines down. (Although since the road was closed at that point, I don't know why a truck was on it). The MC appealed for an electrician or BT engineer and eventually one of the runners stepped forward, checked it out and we got underway. However, maybe it would have been fixed sooner if anyone in the back half of the field knew what was going on. The PA, though plenty loud on the plaza, did not carry down the street where the runners were lined up. So we stood, and stood, and stood, without a scooby about what the delay was and when we might start. (Eventually I left the pen and wandered down the street, where I found out. I was going to report back, but was beaten to it by a ten-foot tall vintage golfer (a number of actors had obviously been employed to jollify the occasion). So I went into a fancy dress shop to warm up (as did quite a few other runners).

The race had a limit of 1500, sold 750 places, yet only 568 finished, a particularly high no show rate. Just as well: and also just as well it was dry, or that banking could have been carnage. Meh.

Yikes, doesn’t sound like you had an experience to make you want to enter again next year!

Not really. The t-shirt was ok, and any £10 for a tenner is not a total washout, but still. Maybe the organisers will take on feedback - paying for around 10m of one lane of a roundabout would eliminate the grassy bank for example.

I've got it off my chest, anyway ;-)

Good luck for Sunday :-) You'll have a couple of thousand people finish behind you, at least.

That's a shame Dv. Good event summary though. Thanks. I'm astonished with so many knowledgeable people organising running events and so many good events on that people (well meaning, I'm sure) can still stuff it up! You wouldn't try and organise a car driving event or kayak event without doing a bit of research and maybe getting some experienced people involved to help plan and organise so why do some folk just try and set up a run with little or no knowledge. Though maybe that's unfair and just a few things went wrong on the day. Hopefully they either improve or it's one to avoid for the future!

Good luck to all doing Glasgow Half on Sunday. Fabulously well organised event all round. I remember Santababy being interviewed by Clyde 1, local Glasgow radio and telling them what a great job they'd done, so much better than Edinburgh! They loved that! :-) G

No Glasgow for me either which is a shame as it had been in my sights when it became clear I wasn't doing an Autumn marathon, but the lingering niggle means that I wouldn't be able to do myself justice

Its been a few years since I did Glasgow and it is one I really enjoy.
