XC is, indeed, cross country so should be slower than a road race...in theory.
You're aren't stupid, just new!

Doesn't wind me up quite as much as people using garmin time as opposed to official race time on their results! Grrrrrr! Either of them, you're only cheating yourself!

Garmin time is ok if the race is not chip timed. At least I think so and that's what I'd record

Then people can just put whatever they like! My 5k pb is 24.01, my garmin read 23.59. My pb is 24.01. Thats what power of 10 says. So thats the official result. Otherwise I can just put anything as a pb. Garmin time depends on when you press it, if it records accurately, if its on autopause etc!

A race time is usually what the race results say, however any race that has you taking a long time to cross the line should have chip timing, so I can see why someone would take watch time in that scenario. In small races without chip timing, the start doesn't really affect the result.
Why feel like a fraud due to your 100m time? Did you not run the time?
