Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

No 24 year old goes out on a work do, straight after work but does not realise they haven’t had their phone all day and that it’s left at home.

Even if they did, a 0.000001% chance knowing 24 year olds, you’d at least discover it immediately you got back. This was discovered ‘some time later’.

Clearly lied to the Police to get a new upgraded phone from work and is still lying. Suspect the resignation is to kill the story now in case the real story emerges.

Extremely disappointing but hopefully her going means it won’t snowball. But a very nasty sleazy feel to the whole episode.

Agree with that it was the sort of thing that a stupid youngster might do and generally get away with.

I've see plenty of people joke about listing the fictitious things they lose in a burglary etc. But was it not a joke and they actually did it?

Local businessman recently offered a discount for cash (VAT fraud, he was quite open about it). Obviously most of his customers take him up on it quite happily, while tutting about the state of local services etc. I know it's not exactly the same offence, but not so different really.

(In fact now I think about it, it wasn't even for cash, the amount was larger than that, it was BACS straight into his account either way, with paperwork and receipt or without.)

(And by the way @run free wasn't ignoring your question about Australia ban on social media for under 16s. Just didn't really have much info or strong view on it. Sounds good if draconian? :-) G )

I would think a better solution would be better regulation and management of social media, but this seems to be impossible. "Too big to regulate" seems to be the new "too big to fail".

Did she lie about being mugged, or was she genuinely mugged but the work phone wasn't taken and that was the lie and a convenient ruse to get an upgrade?

She was convicted of lying about whether she had the work phone on her or not I believe.

And the conviction is completely spent. And was declared to Starmer.

Do we have no capacity for rehabilitation in this country? Clearly she and Starmer believe the population don't have that appetite, which is really disappointing.

Starmer can't really play this as "whiter than white" because the reports are that she'd disclosed it and he'd OK'd it. So his judgement was that this was fine. Which now seems to be being reversed.

In terms of raw politics though, going now kills the story faster. So I can see why they've done it.

Meanwhile the Labour government are supporting genocide in Gaza, via their arms sales so their place on the moral highground is far from secure

Baz - there's different stories. Hers, and Sky's which implies it was all a scam to get a new model phone. For which she was also sacked. Odd that it was some time after the 'mugging' that she found the old phone (after she'd already got a replacement from work).

But Sky's analysis, besides her P&O comments and closeness to Sue Gray, end with
In 2022, speaking about the partygate scandal, Sir Keir Starmer said "you can’t be a lawmaker and a lawbreaker".
This appears to show what that mantra looks like when transplanted into the realities of government.

(or the realities of things becoming public, since Keir seemingly has known about it all along)

yeah thats why I said at first it seemed to me as much ado about nothing, as I was reading her story, but then when you hear the other side it all gets murky. However as larkim says, its done and dusted now and was 10 years ago and didnt happen recently
