The debate in parliament level is pretty trivial and the debate isn't a meaningful thing in the main chamber, it's just an empty room somewhere. There have been loads of them over the years and no-one ever takes a blind bit of notice.

And yet with all that, the RW press etc are enjoying shouting about the petition. Maybe I should be quite pleased and excited about that as they've got nothing else to shout about, so I should just merrily leave them to it.

I didn't realise it was not a main chamber thing. That said, it's now the petition with the third most signatures ever so it's news worthy. I feel like the BBC only started reporting on it when the numbers hit number that seemed worth reporting on but might be wrong. en.m.wikipedia.org Obviously it can be argued that 2.6 million calling for a general election is a lot based on the number of voters in a GE. I imagine most don't want the Tories back (I imagine they don't feel ready either) so it must Farage's people organising to get those kind of numbers. |

Numbers are under notable petitions. Interesting that the top two are a petition to reverse Brexit and another that would have changed the threshold in the referendum and therefore prevented Brexit.

paulcook wrote: Just in case your tiny violin needs further practice, the Times today has a story about John Kemp-Welch, 88, who owns 5,000 acres of “difficult hill farming land” in Perthshire. “It’s not easy,” he said. “Farming in Scotland is very tough but we are determined to go on.” Kemp-Welch said an inheritance tax bill would be “very expensive and possibly fatal. It will all go to my children and they will suffer.” Yes. All in it together. This time for real telegraph.co.uk Hard to work out whether this headline is real or parody! Not relevant to the story, and so not mentioned by the Times, is that Sir John was the former chair of the London Stock Exchange, a stockbroker for 30 years and is still on the board of HSBC. |

Lol, which reinforces the point that it's actually not genuine farmers kicking up the fuss.

What percentage, would you say, of the people now wanting a re-run of the general election were also adamant that the Brexit vote was an overwhelming democratic mandate which must never be revisited and Remoaners should just get over it? 100%? More?

Although my info has gone through three people before getting to me, I believe their may be good news for Scottish higher rate tax payers in our budget next week. Source Kate Forbes. Allegedly. Presumably in response to the IFS stating the SNP taxation policy had led to reduced taxation receipts. |

US election count update. Yes it's still going on. All but one seats have been called. The current situation is 220-214. Yesterday after 3 weeks, the Democrat in CA-13 overtook the Republican, by 184 votes. This morning he is now ahead by 190 votes, with hardly any remaining. It's looking like the house will therefore be 220-215. So Matt Gaetz has already gone. Trump has two more appointments to make so it will be 217-215 for the first 3 months of his presidency. So just one republican defection will basically derail any legislation. And Mike Johnson might not even get renewed as speaker. So it turns out to achieve this outcome the Republicans have actually cheated (no hyperbole). In 2022, they flipped the North Carolina Supreme Court. They then grossly gerrymandered three safe Democrat seats in North Carolina to make them three new Republican seats. That three seats would basically mean Democrats would otherwise have control of the house... |
