“Charity is a cold grey loveless thing. If a rich man wants to help the poor, he should pay his taxes gladly, not dole out money at a whim.”

Clement Attlee, I am reliably informed.

I suspect, especially in times of defunding public services if charities were funded by tax they would quickly be absorbed into other organisations and lose their focus so lifeboats become the coast guard and end up as simply more cutters and not a special force, the Samaritans taken into social services etc etc

I hadn't actually thought of it like that. You probably raise a very good point because as much as I agree with other posters above that we shouldn't need these charities and some services ought to be funded by the public purse, having them as charities is one of few ways the public can actually choose, indirectly and with some cohesive push, what services they want.

Talking of charities, the family of grifters that were Captain Tom’s relatives have lost their appeal against the spa demolition.

Such a shame that the memory of a good man is tarnished by greedy relatives.

Doesn’t alter the fact that he did what he did. Unlikely that he set off with the intention of making money for themselves. Hope not anyway.

Just one thing about potentially bringing things like Samaritans "in house", it could potentially change the service. One of the things about Sams is that it is anonymous. The volunteers at the end of the phone don't know the person's name, location or phone number, unless the caller chooses to share that with the volunteer. It means there is a level of "self determination", where the caller is in control of what they do and the decisions they make (except for in the case of a safe guarding issue, where emergency services can be called if enough information is known). If it was taken into social services, and even if there was still the promise of anonymity, I wonder if callers would be sceptical of that, and not use the service?

As a matter of interest, Sams is London Marathon's "Charity of the Year" for next year's event.

That was all part of my point, gov funding the charities, and perhaps absorbing them risks the charity losing the essence of itself.
