Boris still exudes private education and privilege and doesn't have a "man of the people" alongside him to salve that concern of a good chunk of northern, working class leavers. Once upon a time, say up to the 1960s, he might have picked up the deferential voters who believed that the establishment classes knew best, but that's nowhere near as prevalent. Farage would be (inexplicably to me!) a different prospect however, electorally. I'd fear his ability to make inroads up here if he was associated with a party that could credibly be expected to form a govt. |

Larks - I saw that exact point made the other day. TBP might take votes from Lab. Tories will take fewer. Hence the article about seats where UKIP didn't stand and the tory vote that I posted the other day. |

But if there's a pact with Tories that will toxify them (in the eyes of disgruntled labour voters). And if they don't they will hurt the Tories much more elsewhere.

Jda that is a big assumption. I think the best assumption we can make is that most our assumptions are wrong |

Certainly big assumptions (two of them) but surely more likely right than not.

I think it's fair to say that David Cameron's reentry into the plot has not been universally welcomed. Not a lot of "For he's a jolly good fellow"s being sung.

I was surprised there's an 18 page Boris Johnson appreciation thread here not606.com You'd assume the contributors would be solid traditional Labour voters, yet seem much more Boris, with only the odd dissenter! Going to be very interesting to see what happens come a GE if that's representative, personally I find it very worrying, but is this any worse than when Thatcher was getting in? |

Johnson is popular with the south (outside of London) in England. He ain't popular in Scotland , where he needs to be, to avoid losing 10 seats or more. His problems is his popularity percentages under FPTP don't translate into a majority. Under PR it may well.
