My view FWIW is that cross-training is particularly helpful for the older runner. And from a personal point of view, adding over the last month, has seen my 5k times tumble for perceived effort. Last Christmas I was giving it 100% effort and was 1-2 minutes slower than my current times. This leads me to the old fashioned periodisation view. For me, a period of 'boring' high mileage low intensity, followed by a period of low mileage high(er) intensity coupled with and . This wouldn't be applicable to youngster's like Boab and SPR, but for oldie's (like me) I think it would work. |

Boab I agree that even a high volume of low intensity can produce accumulating tiredness. I think the key issue in the training of Ed Whitlock was the cautious build up of volume. He took y years to build from 2 hour runs several days per eek to 3 hour runs several days per week (at age 73. He increased the duration in small steps, and was prepared to step back of he was too tired or achy. So he was very patient, but at age 73 produced that amazing 2:54:49. But even Whitlock eventually showed a marked decline as he approached 80. Eventual decline is inevitable but I wonder whether there was anything he could have done have delayed the decline further. It should be noted that he himself considered it was very important to minimise the pounding of his legs, and adopted a slow shuffling gait in training. This suggests that the two most plausible possibilities for delaying the decline even further would have been some form of cross training that maintained his aerobic capacity without the repeated eccentric contractions at footfall, or alternatively, some strength training to allow his legs to withstand the continual pounding. |

Boab, One addition point: you mentioned you would like to see comparison with other types of training. Stoggl and Sperlich did a randomised comparison between 4 types of training: polarised, high volume, high intensity, threshold in a group of 48 well trained runners, cyclists, triathletes, and cross-country skiers. Numbers of athletes assigned to each type of training were small, but nonetheless there were statistically significant differences. Polarised training produced the greatest increase in VO2max ,time to exhaustion in a ramp test, and peak velocity/power. Neither high volume nor threshold produced appreciable change in these already well trained athletes. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov |

Week 27 Polarised training Easy running: 400 min, 6:35 /Km, aHR 73% HRmax Elliptical easy: 20 min High intensity: 4x3 min, peak HR 95% Total 432 min; 97.2% easy, 2.8 % high intensity I did the high intensity session at the beginning of the week, and found it more demanding than usual. The next day was busy at work and I only had time for a short run. By Weds morning I was aware of feeling tried. I did the elliptical submaximal test that I developed last year to assess accumulated stress. This revealed low HRV at rest and high HR across a range of workloads. It appeared likely that I had built up the training volume a little too rapidly in the previous week, so I had a rest day. In the remaining 4 days of the week I did four 80 minute runs with no evidence of fatigue. Next week I will again increase the duration of long runs, but will only do 4 long runs. In light of the discussion about the optimum intensity for high intensity session, on the thread in the past few days, I will also make a small decrease in the intensity of the HIIT session. |

Hi Canute, I am going to be including the HIIT session this week in my training. I'll report back at the end of the week. Will see how the 4X8mins go. Do you know what they recommend for recovery?

Boab I am not sure what was done in the study mentioned by Seiler. I have oftern done 3x10min at a slightly lower intensity, with a 2 min easy recovery. However, 2 min is not enough for full recovery and HR during the effort epochs is typically higher in the thrid effort epoch relatve to the first. HR rise to about 88% of max in the first effort epoch and 93% in the third. |

I'd be happy to go to half time recovery in the first instance. It may be that I start to reduce recovery time without affecting pace or effort over time. Certainly 2 minutes would be the goal as I think you need to have enough recovery before the next rep. Too little and the pace for a given effort level will likely be diminished. Scheduled for Friday so I'll report back after.

Week 28 Polarised training Easy running: 466 min, 6:26 /Km, aHR 73% Elliptical easy: 16 min High intensity: 24 min. 2x10min with 2 min recovery;1x4 min, peak HR 93.5% Total 506 min; 95.3% easy, 4.7 % high intensity I achieved my target of 4 long runs of 95 minutes, a shorter run and a high intensity elliptical session. Following the discussion on the thread last week regarding the best form of high intensity session I decreased the intensity aiming for peak HR of 90% max this week, but on examining HR record found that I had reached 93%. Although I am doing the long runs at a very relaxed paces and feel quite comfortable, I am concerned to ensure that I do not over-do the total intensity while increasing long run duration, so I will slacken the intensity of the high intensity session a little more next week |

Morning Cantue, nice work last week. I unfortunately didn't feel at all well last week and while I kept the volume up, there was no effort based training. I'm hoping I am over it now and can crack on with giving this a try. Today is my tempo based work (marathon to half marathon pace), but depending on how I feel I might switch it to the HIIT session. You've got to go with how you feel on the day and be prepared to switch things around.
