A bunch of runners from our club have been invited to run at a prison parkrun. It was a big success and I believe a return visit is on the cards. One of our currently non-running members has a sort of field kitchen which he took along and served up hot drinks and bacon butties for all participants. We've also donated unwanted race T shirts and other kit to the prison so the inmates have decent running kit to wear. Anything that gives the people on the inside a feeling of belonging to a supportive community is to be applauded, I agree HT.

Very interesting LD. What was the course like? The stereotype I have is of an exercise yard, so they would have to run around 50 times. I am sure you made a great impression on the inside

A similar issue with boundaries must have affected the now defunct Camp Bastion parkrun course in Afghanistan. However, whilst the main page is available the course page isn't complete so not sure if they were able to be imaginative with the layout

No there was a big field within the perimeter Teddy. I will find out how it came about - I think one of our members knows/is related to someone who works there, and it followed from that. But I bet there are other prison parkruns who might welcome contact from other clubs so I'll find out and let you know.

I do know that there were a lot of security hoops to get through - it wasn't at all a spontaneous, just turn up for a bit of tourism- type morning :-)

Reflecting LD's experience, a couple of our regulars ran at the original prison parkrun a year or two back. They made contact with the Event Director who was pleased to have 'outsiders' involved and guided them through the multiple security hoops. In that particular case, the route involved eight laps of an enclosed but outside space.

From the feedback I've heard, the experience was wholly positive on all sides with the inmates encouraged by the fact that folk on 'the outside' were being supportive of their efforts to rehabilitate.

I can't recall the details, but I have seen reports that the original mover for that parkrun (the person who first acted on the idea, if you like) has been formally recognised in a number of circles :)

TM - see if you can find any historic strava heatmaps - may show the course.

But with a 3.5km runway, I doubt they were too confined by space. Other reasons, maybe.

Hello
I did Black Combe prison parkrun a couple of years ago. It was an 8 loop course
Had a long chat with the RD and inmates, really quite inspiring to hear how parkrun had changed things for them and given them a purpose
