I have a photo of myself at the 2006 London Marathon taken when I was twenty or so yards behind the runner in front of me. It looks as though I’m leading the field. I actually finished in just under five hours.

I did the 2006 London Marathon too. My one and only marathon. I finished in 4h 17m.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I had the opposite experience at the Hoy Half Marathon (field about 100). At about 8 miles I could hear someone behind me for quite a while (other than the wind - absent that day - Hoy is a very peaceful place). Eventually I turned around to see a long stretch of empty road across a deserted moor. The ghost runner?

Well done on the win!
I would have expected a bit more joy from the finishers.

57.5 Degrees of Pain
During my last cross country race I was so far behind the next runner they were out of sight. But there was a crowd in touch with me behind. I did enjoy the fantasy of leading the race for a while!

Because of the nature of my running I am quite often a resounding last in my races.... but I win quite a few too!

The only time that I’m likely to win anything is if there was a category unique to me, i.e. a man of my age, with my name and born in the same hospital. Otherwise I’m down the back end of the also-rans. But the important thing is the “ran”.

Still no running going on here. Sore left foot is not quite so sore but still shuffling around at home resting it. Hopefully a few more days of resting it, flexing it and popping the odd ibuprofen and it might be back to normal (fingers crossed anyway).

Some years ago I was running (OK...jogging or plodding!) along a trail by a river and I heard what sounded like someone running behind me...it was a Canada Goose undoubtedly trying to catch me and it held my pace for a good twenty metres...which kinda crushed my ego! Yeah...a wild goose chase!
