I understand where you're coming from with the O races fozzy but it might be better for my health and time management if Fetch doesn't make those changes! Otherwise I might be too tempted to go back and add in all my races and there are over 1700 in total of them of which over a 1000 are orienteering races..... ;-)

Just add them a few at a time....;-)

I've only got about 100 or so to add!

Yes Bazoaxe, very much so. What makes you think otherwise?

Yes!

They have published results with times and positions. You run hard, racing against others.

Just because you don't know the route beforehand, that doesn't make it not a race.

do you all start at same time and/or is first across the line the winner ?

Just not sure I would treat as a race.....

I often dont know the route beforehand......but so far theres always been someone to follow.....albeit one time I couldnt see anyone ahead or hear anyone behind and it wasnt clear if I was still on the route !

Sometimes you do all start at the same time (mass start, score and relays), but the "purest" form you usually start at intervals of 1min (or 2mins at the elite level).

But, just like in a "normal" race, the fastest time wins...

It's just different, just like a road race is different to XC.

Would you class, for example, heats in track races, as not being races because the whole field doesn't run at the same time?

In general Bazoaxe they are time trials (but so are many cycle races) in order to reduce following, though relays involve mass starts. But competitive orienteering events are very much races with the emphasis on covering the set course as fast as possible. If they weren't then it would be very difficult to have valid championships at all levels including world. The only significant difference between an orienteering race and any other running race where fastest wins is that you never know where you are going until you pick the map up on the start line but I don't see that makes it any less a race?

but in a 'normal' race they dont start people off at intervals - unless its a handicap.....the weather conditions could be significantly different for competitors

Heats are different as you race those in your heat....apart from the fastest losers which is luck of the draw often
