I don't mind eating field beans straight out of the pod, but they are mostly used to make cattle feed (or exported to north africa to be turned into falafel- or hummus-like things), and as Rosehip said, nitrogen fixing. They're nicer when picked quite small though.

Fragile Do Not Bend
I might save the seed if I get any from it, and plant them for ornamental plants, the flowers are very pretty.

Borlotti beans are much nicer, and I actually managed to grow a few, unlike other types of beans I tried.

Parsley and coriander just showing through yesterday and other things continue. The bees are busy on the fruit bushes. Three of my six courgettes were munched though, grrr! By, presumably, the snail sitting on the corner of their tray, which was the largest I've seen outside of a zoo :-) Lucky there was anything left, I suppose.

Right, time to head out and see how many marigolds have been nibbled overnight. There was rain! Forecast dry another three days now.

I have just planted out the peas I have been growing, runner beans and french beans need to be planted out soon too but I am worried we may still get a ground frost.

I have put the two biggest runner bean plants out, might as well stagger them in case of frst nd maybe to extend the glut :)

Have hidden some rainbow chard in the new flower border - don't think husband will realise they're veg ;)

Today has mainly been moving soil from one place to another, trying to flatten the area behind where the old pond was to move the log-store there out of the way (and weather). Good exercise.

I pulled up a few dozen rainbow chard seedlings out of one of the flower beds this morning. They do work well as ornamental plants, but be careful about letting them self-seed...
