Unless the organisers change the rules. We have had family holidays, me, wife, two children, from Friday to Sunday. For Β£150 it is still a bargain. Plus if you're rubbish like me, the lift back from 100 failure is a pretty penny. |

I wouldnβt say itβs a bargain. The price includes a profit for the organiser, plus massive donations to charity. A bargain would be a race held at break even pricing. But itβs a great race and course, I can see the lure of coming back again and again. Although Iβm not trying this year. |

As with many events it now seems to have become a cash cow product with pricing designed largely to empty the pockets of those with a serious FOMO problem rather than to create a serious accessible sporting occasion with high levels of competition, which in most cases was the starting point.

The 105 is a similar price to Berlin marathon, and probably other majors, and they don't include camping at the start and 40 hours of support.

having the option to camp onsite for two nights included* makes it more affordable than something cheaper I'd have to add camping to - it can't be cheap to have the portaloos - and keep emptying them, the water bowsers and to employ security/parking help for 24 hours There are other events I might chose to do instead if I don't get in, but usually need to source accommodation etc. *wish we could pay to have Sunday night too |

And Vrap? That's just pure whataboutery and suggests the Berlin Marathon is potentially even more over priced and profiteering. It's become very apparent in recent years that the higher the SM profile of a race and the greater the FOMO created the larger the entry fee. A race like the Fellsman offers everything the LL50/100 does (eg race, plentiful well stocked checkpoints, camping, parking, school facilties, bussing etc) but manages to do it for much less. Given the Lakeland is a bigger event with the fixed costs spread over a larger entry what's it's excuse apart from profiteering? |

I don't think I've ever come across a road race that I think is value for money. Barely even at half the price either. Though I do understand the overheads probably required for various stuff. |

That's an interesting accusation of "whataboutery", @flyingfinn. It's a valid comparison that a distance runner might make when choosing how to spend a finite race entry budget. I don't know whether or not the entry costs for any of these entries are rapacious. It wouldn't be surprising if organisers were trying to push the boundaries of how much money they could squeeze out of entrants, and shift the amount we're prepared to normalise as has happened with running footwear, but I'd be almost as unsurprised if the organisers were able to justify the increase in entry costs by detailing the increase in the costs of running the events. |

I think we need to define profiteering as opposed to "a business making a profit" here. Is the Fellsman run by a "not for profit", rather than a commercial organisation? Lakeland 50 / 100 isn't cheap. It certainly makes a decent profit. It does give some money to charity. It is reasonably well organised and delivers what it says it does. Some people are a bit culty about it and do it every year, but nobody makes anybody do it. Plenty of other options if you think it is a rip off. |
