Not yet! 😂 the days I have measured so far have been a mile or two over 70, which sort of takes care of another 20 and I'd assumed it was 12x70 and bits to get to the full distance. I hadn't noticed the short day when I looked at the rest of the route

My only real experience of running on A roads with support was in the Round Norfolk Relay in the middle of the night. Then I had both a bike and a car behind me but I can't say I found it a comfortable experience when trying to run hard, particularly when something came up fast behind us and overtook. At least she won't have the issue of your unit trying to overtake another runner and their support. That felt like everyman for themselves!

Gus, I can't see a flaw in your analysis. I've just measured the day from Cowdenbeath to Dalnaspidal and the following day and both come in at about 72 miles.

Could this be that much of a shorter route? Straight up the Welsh Marches and missing Fort William by some way? (Carla doesn't say that *her* route is 874 miles.)

Good point regards she hasn't said what her route measures........

Is Edinburgh-Perth-Inverness not the "normal" route then ? Going via Fort William seems a bit out of the way ??

I've seen plenty LEJOG/JOGLE cyclists etc on the Perth-Inverness section over the years

This website, which seems well researched, suggests that the shortest non-motorway route is 866 miles, so it looks as if adopting straight lines and multiple A roads doesn't take many miles off compared with the more scenic alternatives. I must say I'm quite surprised that the difference isn't greater.

Even taking (72 x 11) + 41 gives only 833 miles, so that still doesn't quite work ...

Fort William - I don't know. I saw it on several of the maps that came up in an image search just now. Thinking about it, I suppose many or even most riders do a lot more than 874 miles and are focusing more on the journey than the shortest distance/time.

There'll be a route map of the 874 mile route somewhere, as it seems a well-established distance ...

If you google for "End to End Trail", there are numerous published routes which mostly avoids actual roads (although I think the A9 stretch in the north of Scotland can be avoided only by taking other A roads instead such as the A836, which add distance and aren't really any safer.)

Right, two more distances to add into the mix!

First, 812.5 miles.

This is from whoever maintains Carla's instagram feed:

"As we approach 40km into Day 6 Carla has shown nothing but resilience, determination, strength with a little bit of crazy in the mix. She's had sore quads, sore toes, sore glutes... today we have sore calves. With every step she takes she's that one step closer to Scotland and one step closer to breaking the Guinness Female World Record Running from Lands End to John O'Groats 😱

Current Location: Preston
Current KM accumulated: 590km
To go: 710km"

Those 1,300 km equate to 812 miles, which pretty much matches Gus's 11 days plus 41 miles.

Second, 822 miles.

From a BBC report on Sharon Gayter's record run last year:

bbc.co.uk

So, it seems there are shorter routes out there which are accessible on foot (and maybe not to road bikes).

I've got other things to do now, but I have just noticed an off-road stretch over the Pentland Hills on the Cross Borders Drove Road and Thieves Road. That will explain some of the difference, at least.

Well spotted Synge. I had only seen tarmac on the stretches I'd zoomed in on.
