Our club (se London) cancelled club night on Tues which is probably the right call.

We're just on the border of the red zone, our club cancelled tonight's session which with predicted 35-36deg I think is the right call.

We were in the amber zone yesterday and had a T&F meeting for the League. The League organisers removed the 3000m from the schedule and the 600m for the u11 runners, despite the fact that the 3000m was at the coolest part of the schedule (11:45) and U15s had to run 1500m at about 3pm.

In truth, it was no more than countless other hot summers' days when meetings have run fine, but the fact that there was the amber label attached to the day meant a lot of parents chose to vote with their feet and keep their kids away because it might be "dangerous" which was a little disappointing as in fact it was pretty OK to participate in and all of the clubs who attended had made good provision with gazebos, plenty of water around etc for everyone to participate and not get into any distress. I hated it as I hate hot weather, but at no point did I feel unsafe.

My clubs cancelled the kids, adults assumed to be able to make their own decisions. A foolish assumption.

If my club did, say, a 4 mile easy run in the forest on one of the two nights, just for a "safety in numbers" coupled with a bit of motivation due to it being sociable I might be tempted to join them. Speaking to the officials yesterday, part of their reason for cancelling the 3000m was that "distance runners are a mad bunch", which isn't a totally unfair perspective!

In the end, we cancelled, which I think is the right decision.

It was very uncomfortable an hour ago, and it's going to be hotter tomorrow.

Our club didn't cancel tonight.

I didn't go, I went to an air-conditioned gym.

Be interesting to see who went

Ours cancelled this evening’s run. Maybe not strictly necessary (I’m not there and not entirely sure how hot it is) but being a fell club they have a good safety culture.

The last of our local clubs 5k series is tomorrow night in Windsor and has been cancelled. There’s no shade and it was for the sake of the volunteers as much as for the runners. Speaking as a volunteer who was out in full sun for over 4.5 hours on Saturday without a break, I say good. It was hell for us officials and tomorrow is hotter.

About This Thread

We're debating over whether it's right to have our usual club run on tues due to the extreme temperatures forecast.

Or to at least mitigate to a woodland route or perhaps go later.

Because obviously we have a duty of care to the runners who attend.

Interested to hear what other clubs are doing please
