I started googling and there is a wealth of info out there about the differences between men and women in terms of HR and HR calculations due to heart size plus how to calculate a MHR.

Essentially the same ‘principles’ count but looks like the equations to work out zones/MHR aren’t so clear cut.

Resounding echoes of ‘women are not just small men’ through most things….

Rosehip didn't we confirm that Garmin was just using a different MHR that correlated with your max?

Think it was using fitness age? Makes some sense as my Garmin just shows fitness age. My calculated max is slightly higher than what the fitness age would put it at (it started at that and inched up slightly).

phal / TeeBee - Just looked through the stuff and basically hardly any mention made of gender other the Gulati method for calculating max HR. I'd agree with what is implied, that women probably need a different set of equations.

Sadly yet another area where men assume a one size fits all, as with appliances, cars etc etc.

Forgot about that conversation :)
I’m sure Garmin’s fitness age and max hr are linked, but not sure which drives the other.

Somewhere on the thread there was a link / comment that fitness age has a minimum of age -8 and when I had a birthday, my fitness age went up one too.

The firstbeat calculation gives me 172.3, but garmin has set mine at 177 (it goes up and down a couple of beats every so often)

It also seems to know to ignore the random 210+ numbers I get with either watch or strap occasionally

I have a feeling that on one of Stephen Seiler’s videos he said something about his daughter’s hr range being very wide and her bands being slightly different %s, but can’t find anything online

At the most basic, I think that several female Fetchies generally found the keeping whr sub-70% for easy runs thing was just too low a heart rate for them, and made hr training a dispiriting grind. Starting with sub-73%, and even tweaking that upwards if required, could be a starting point.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
