Could you not combine both and just substitute one of the P & D sessions for a sub LT that builds into an MP run 6 weeks or so out?

Hi all, I am new to this thread and have just started (since December) a winter Hadd Phase 1 training block. Very slow initially at my base Hadd pace 135bpm (over 10m/m) but getting into it now. Done an initial test (only 2k distance not 2.4k), but now looking forward to lots of steady weeks of plodding at sub LT, to gain the aerobic improvements for more intense training in the Springtime. Happy with the volume that the method has allowed me to reach without too much physical distress. As everyone does, I was training generally too fast in previous years and have picked up approx one injury a year. Hadd makes sense to me since I think I have missed a whole load of toothpaste in my tube (or a sign of older age??)

Baz - What are you expecting to gain from the Jack Daniels sessions?

Baz- did you already give Hadd a total marathon go? If not, looks like now might be an ideal time to see what if. Save for JD for next time.
OR if your HR zones too low and you want to jump start them with faster intervals - for the marathon I mean - have such jump starts worked in the past? I`ve been way to opportunistic in the past myself, so I`m trying Hadd this time...

TPH - Steady is great. I think we`ve all probably missed a whole load of toothpaste in our tubes one way or another, for better or worse...

Aim is to get some marathon specificity and to follow a plan different to my usual P&D. I know I can get that from HADD as well though and I need to decide what I am going to do !

pondered for a few hours and I am swaying towards HADD.....lets see what run I do tomorrow !
On a separate point I was looking forward to this week's Marathon Talk podcast which had an interview with Jack Daniels. While it was very interesting, there was nothing at all about his training approach for marathons which I was pretty dissapointed by and felt like it was a missed opportunity

Right, got a bit of a question....
I've been running to heart rate for a while, I struggled with my HRM for a bit but recently it's been behaving much better, a few little glitches (was useless on Saturday but needed a charge), but generally well.
Anyway I'm now not worried about the readings, more that I'm not able to use the higher heart rates apart from in a race situation.
I have a max in excess of 200 and have now raced a 5k at over 175, peaking at around 197. This is my PB and got me 17:31.
I run a lot of miles in the 135-145 bracket, and have seen 6:30-6:45 minute miles at this HR recently on a flat run, living at the top of a massive hill in Sheffield, finding a flat run is hard.
I've also had a number of runs (much less frequent) in the 150-160bpm range but these are a struggle to do for an hour.
My typical week looks something like:
Monday after work 4-6 miles home 135-145 BPM Monday evening 6-8 miles with friends - some hills, occasional steady intervals. Tuesday 1 hour, 7 and a bit miles steady 135-145bpm Wednesday 30-40 minutes steady 125~ BPM Thursday 1 hour 145-155 BPM Friday 40 mins ~ 135BPM Saturday - parkrun. Usually have been avg 170-180 BPM Sunday - as long as I can get away with at 135~ BPM.
So I know I can run at higher heart rates, but having got faster at the lower HR, the higher stuff seems a real effort. Others seem to struggle to keep the HR down, not me, I struggle to get it up (oo-err missus).
Do I just need to find a training partner who is fast enough to get into the 160-170 BPM range to properly push the LT up, of will any running sub LT help enough?
Times are improving and have PBd at both 5k and 10k in the last month.
10k PB was 36:34.
Any advise greatfuly received!

Baz- Go Hadd-ward! Got to sub LT at last in top zone C for 35 mins this morning - really did think comfortably keep that going all over again no probs, if I`d hadd the time... v encouraging. (msg to self: mind the sudden injury from out the blue)
Martin Yelling`s coastal excursion was pretty cool, last time I listened to M. Talk...
