The thing with Potter is he had similar approach at Brighton as Southgate did with England - a high degree of pragmatism: patient, possession based football that featured a lot of passing around the back and side to side waiting for the right opportunity. There was a noticeable change once de Zerbi came in, more front-foot attacking football of which Brighton supporters were very appreciative.

We will look back in future years at the rise of England from mutual disgust and utter ineptitude culminating in 2016 to the likeable, very good team of 2018-2024 as the best of times supporting England.

Thank you Gareth.

I hope he enjoys it when the fans and media who gave him such abuse start leading the calls for his return.

The ball is round.

England's win percentage is generally about 60%. Same under Hodgson, Capello, Eriksson, Hoddle, Greenwood.

Imagine having a weighted coin. You win most coin tosses. But not all of them. But if you can win four in a row, you're World Champion. There's no magic to it. You just have to keep being there or thereabouts and in the end you get there.

Weirdly, the managers we remember as being great – Venables, Robson, etc. – have much lower win rates than average, at the same level as Graham Taylor and Steve McLaren.

In short: knighthood for Southgate.

i think this is the first time i've felt sad about and England manager leaving.

would love to see Sarina W given the chance. (Would love to see Sarina or Emma given the chance in men's football generally. they're good enough, but the problem with women in men's football, would be the men).

‘Lampard and Gerrard would be considered outsiders, but their experience of playing for England and coaching at different levels could mean they are spoken to as part of any process.’

I hope the only words spoken are ‘don’t bother sending your CVs in…..’

I'm not sure which is the more laughable suggestion, Lampard, Gerrard? The saddest thing for them both is that Wiegman is a better option (albeit only by comparison).

Is Rooney available? He can’t be working looking at the size of him; he must spend all day eating 🥧

Years ago word was out that Harry Redknapp had been "in talks" with Leicester to get the job there.

Turn out the talks were that his agent rang the club and told them he would be interested, and the club thanked them and hung up.

I hope that's the type of talks that happen for Lampard and Gerrard from the FA.

Lollers at that DT! Brilliant.

Agree with Dio - GERRARD? Don't make me laugh. He wasn't even much cop for England, just for Lpool.

Here’s your chance to be wise before the event.

Instead of England winning / losing in a glorious semi final defeat and afterwards everyone saying, “Told you he was the right man for the job”, or being embarrassingly knocked out of the group stage / losing timidly in the QF and afterwards everyone saying, “Told you he wasn't the right man for the job”, here’s your chance to be wise before the event and put on record whether you think Gareth Southgate is the right manager for...
