I’m obviously biased but……agreed on the architecture of the stadium itself but the statue, the memorial gardens, and the feel of the place make it a bit special to me.

And yes, I know. Everyone thinks their home ground is special, just like a veryone thinks their team should definitely have had “that penalty”!😉

I haven’t been to many of the ‘new’ stadiums, I’ve been to more of the ones they replaced. However, I though St Mary’s (which is over 20 years old now) was horrible, much preferred The Dell.

Nellers, if you had said Filbert Street, I would have seen your point more. A bit ramshackle yes, but bursting with character. Odd, wooden stands, later additions, dark corners, jumpers for goalposts.

OS, Highbury was a joy to visit. Not like the current soulless concrete bowl.

I dunno. I was in the away end at Filbert street a couple of times post Hillsborough and it didn't feel very safe. Can't imagine Dio was expecting bits of the roof to fall on him, the floor to collapse or to be crushed by fellow fans this weekend.

I am biased about Highbury but the East and West Stands almost looked like ships to me!

Huddersfield Town's 1994 new build stadium, modelled on Bolton's Reebok, was a far cry from the dark caverns of covered terrace, the wood framed stand and the 'Cow Shed'. During the mid-70s decline, counting the crowd was quite feasible. :) Ground sharing with Huddersfield Giants maximises the potential of the John Smith's stadium, I believe.

Definitely on the "I prefer old grounds" side of the fence here, though its more the lack of effort in most new grounds that bothers me - draw 2 ovals one inside the other, then fill in the space between them with seats.

Best I can say for York's new ground is that I don't hate it (and it may be the only ground in the country where the main stand is accessed through a swimming pool & library)

For sentimental reasons I loved Filbert Street but you can't really argue that it was an objectively better stadium than any of hte modern constructions. Maybe it was more atmospheric or maybe we're all remembering good old days that weren't really all that good.

Whenever I went to Filbert Street, and it was a long time ago now, there was always a smell of toilets and a threat of sudden violence that is totally absent from the KP.

I think I might be arguing that Filbo's faults are exactly the qualities some people would have loved about older grounds.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
