Does anyone have any tips for home recording? I use MuseScore to compose and create accompaniments for instrumental playing, but it’s a bit basic. I like being able to write blobs on-sticks notation, but would also like to record acoustic (cello, oboe, maybe a bit of brass, vocals) over the top of electronica, be able to mix, add reverb/delay, and use an old Korg workstation for some keyboard lines (early 90s, has onboard sequencer, uses floppy discs, has MIDI but when I got a cable there seems to be some delay with sound arriving in my PC so I probably have the wrong thing). I want to resurrect my old song-writing habit. Happy to spend a bit, but don’t want to break the bank and want something reasonably straightforward to use.

Scarlett Solo plus a mic, comes with free basic software. Cheap and cheerful audio interface. focusrite.com Previous version (3rd gen) is still available for less money. |

Spent lunchtime immersed in YouTube and now have free Cakewalk software downloading which I have to try not to use for a few weeks due to too much other Stuff in the diary. Think I’m going to go for at least a couple of mic inputs on the interface.

I was going to say, you need a DAW, and Cakewalk is a good, capable, free one. The following may sound confusing at first, but hopefully will steer you right as you negotiate teething problems... When you get your audio interface, you will likely get audio lag on a PC until you install ASIO drivers, which you can download from asio4all.org - these can take a bit of getting to grips with, and can be cause unexpected sound issues in your general day-to-day Windows usage, so it's best to get the hang of enabling them only when you want to use your interface, then switching back to standard drivers. |

Thanks ishep. I just found a YouTube on installing them so hopefully that'll get it all working OK. I'm learning a lot of lingo today

This suggests the Scarlett Solo already has Asio drivers? support.focusrite.com It does but I seem to recall that depending on how you wish you system to be specifically configured you may also need to have them downloaded and present on the PC from the link ishep has provided. I use a scarlet 212 (but also have an unused Solo sat in a box somewhere!) and run ALL of my DAW and native PC audio through a pair of studio monitor speakers. Someone else may only wish to run into the DAW and use headphones and/or another set of speakers which could be inbuilt on a laptop for example. The driver setup has an impact on the input/output routes available and need to be 'tweaked' accordingly - which is handled via the PC system side of things rather than the Scarlett. I may be wrong with this though as it has been a long time since I set my rig up. Just as an aside, Cakewalk is an excellent and free DAW - but I found it to be a pain in the rear with the way regular updates and having to have an separate associated account with Bandlab(?). I subsequently moved to 'Reaper' as a more manageable piece of software with what appears to be a larger user base and this more tutorial videos etc. out there. |
