Sorry... they may not breed until 4 years old, but the youngest arrive latest and don't show any breeding behaviour. The 2 and 3 year olds are likely to arrive slightly later than older birds, and may or may not start nest building and mating, but birds under 4 years old are less likely to be successful.

Seems a long way to fly just to do some nest site checking. But flying doesn't really seem to be that much of an issue for swifts...

Yes, today has been the screechiest day for me so far this year. Odd.

(Not me doing the screeching, to be clear).

A very small number of first year birds do stay in Africa, but it is thought to be very small.

And anyway, if you're going to fly non-stop in any case, you might as well go somewhere.

More seriously, if they evolved to go north to where the food sources are (and / or less competition for those resources), then presumably even the young birds are going to fare better further north.

I've literally been watching them out my window all day. Otherwise, I've only noticed one gull.

A few more butterflies in the garden today. Or am I just looking out for them more? Hard to tell.

butterflies in my garden today, first I've seen for a while close - but I also run and walk around proper-looking un-mown meadows and they have seemed fairly normally populated with butterflies, hoverflies etc.

(Plenty of annoying flying protein above any slightly damp bit of mud on the trails)
